Kentucky State Police are investigating a fatal wreck in Clay County involving a Corbin man Wednesday night.
According to state police, 56-year-old Durwin Hopkins was driving a west on the Hal Rogers Parkway just outside of Manchester about 6:50 p.m. when he hit 7-year-old Jasmine Collins of Garrard as she attempted to cross the roadway.
“From what we gathered, her residence is next to the parkway and she was out playing,” said Trooper Lloyd Cochran, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London.
Collins was taken to Manchester Memorial Hospital where she later died.
Cochran said there is nothing to indicate that Hopkins was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
“The crash is still under investigation but it doesn’t appear there will be any criminal charges filed against Hopkins,” Cochran said.
Cochran added that he could not comment at this time as to whether anyone was watching the girl. Police will be interviewing her parents as part of the investigation.
Hopkins, who drives a tractor-trailer for Averitt Express, was en route back to London.
Trooper Delzie Kelly is in charge of the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Sergeant Steve Smallwood, Trooper Jarrod Smith, Trooper Josh Cox, KSP Detective Jeff Senters, vehicle enforcement officers, Clay County EMS, Clay County Sheriff’s deputies and the Manchester Fire and Rescue.
