It was announced Thursday afternoon by Gov. Andy Beshear’s office that a total of $8.5 million is being awarded to help fund a total of twelve improvement projects to community facilities across the Commonwealth.
Among those projects is a significant upgrade to the kitchen of the Corbin Senior Citizen Center, which serves an average of 170 meals each day.
According to Director Amber Case, most of the meals served at the facility are currently prepared at the Senior Citizen Center of Whitley County, located in downtown Williamsburg, and are then transported up to Corbin.
Case said that the new grant funds, which total $351,000, will help to make the kitchen at the Corbin facility fully functional and self-sustaining, with new equipment and increased storage space.
Case could not give an approximate timeline for when construction will get underway, but she said that she has been communicating with a local church in order to ensure that an alternate site will be available for meal service and other activities to continue while work is ongoing. More details on that arrangement will be made known as soon as they are known.
Case said that she is excited about this development, as the number of meals served at the Senior Citizen Center has doubled since the request for these grant funds were first submitted. She added that the facility is always accepting either monetary or supply donations from the community, as it provides all of its meals and other services to members at no cost.
