Corbin teams advance to Elite Eight of KHSAA state soccer tourneys

Date:

The Corbin Redhounds and Lady Hounds started play in the 2017 KHSAA state championship soccer tournaments Tuesday night, with both teams advancing on to Saturday’s quarterfinal round in Lexington.

The Corbin girls were in Prestonsburg Tuesday, playing against the Region 15 champion Lady Blackcats. The Lady Hounds looked like the underdogs on paper, but in the end it was Sarah Fryer who scored two goals and lifted Corbin to a 2-1 victory. The win improves the team to 10-11-2 ahead of an Elite Eight matchup against Notre Dame (20-5-2) this Saturday in Lexington.

The Corbin boys were also on the road Tuesday, facing Region 15 champions Pikeville. Goals by Trey Cima and Jacob Johnson allowed the Hounds to also come out on the winning end of a 2-1 final score, improving their season record to 13-5 and advancing them to play against Region 9 champions Ryle (23-2-2) in Lexington on Saturday.

The News Journal will provide updates on these upcoming quarterfinal round matchups when they become available.
