An elderly Corbin resident was found bruised and a little battered early Tuesday morning, but otherwise safe and sound after a massive seven-hour search.
Lena Jones, 86, a resident of Engineer Street, was reported missing by her son at around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening.
According to Corbin Police Public Affairs Officer Rob Jones, she had walked away from her home and became disoriented and got lost.
Police quickly called for assistance from surrounding volunteer fire departments to help with the search. West Knox Volunteer
Fire Department and Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department participated.
Rob Jones said tracking dogs were used to aid in the search.
According to Whitley County Second District Constable Ron Bowling, who also assisted, the dogs tracked the woman’s path for over two miles as she apparently walked in behind the Princess Vermillion McBurney Recreation Center and along Lynn Camp Creek for some distance.
Eventually, she was found sitting on the porch of a home on Florence Ave. behind P.J. Car Tunes.
"She had some bruises, cuts and contusions from several falls," Rob Jones said.
He added that she was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center to be checked out before being released.
A Golden Alert was issued shortly after Jones was reported missing. The Golden Alert system is a statewide notification that allows a search to begin immediately for anyone 18-years-old or older that is reported missing and that suffers from Alzheimer’s disease or mental disability.
