Gray man arrested in 2017 case of unlawfully imprisoning minors

Date:

A Gray man is behind bars in connection with a 2017 case in which police say he kept two minors inside his apartment against their will.

According to his arrest citation, Sonny Drummonds, 41, of Gray, picked up two male juveniles at the Circle K Store in Corbin on Oct. 12, 2017. Using his vehicle, he then allegedly drove the pair back to his apartment.

Drummonds then “caused the minors to engage in illegal controlled substance by giving them 3 marijuana cigarettes to smoke with the violator [Drummonds] while inside his apartment,” reads the citation signed by Corbin Police Officer David Maiden.

The citation further alleges the “juveniles stated that they attempted to leave the violator’s apartment several times, but each time the violator told them that they could not leave, making them feel that they were being kept inside his apartment against their will.”

A warrant was issued for Drummonds’ arrest on Oct. 27, 2017 and was finally executed on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019. He is charged with second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and second-degree unlawful imprisonment.

County Attorney Gilbert Holland said the reason behind the delay in arrest is simple:

“That warrant was issued back then and I guess they just never ran into him or they didn’t know where he was. It’s just been an active warrant. It happens sometimes.”

As of press time, Drummonds’ first court appearance has not been scheduled. He remains in the Knox County Detention Center.
