Several University of the Cumberlands students have been inducted into various honors societies, including the following.
Phi Alpha Theta
Corbin’s Catelin Ball and Williamsburg’s William Coleman were recently inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, national history honor society.
Phi Alpha Theta is an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. The society has over 400,000 members, with some 9,000 new members joining each year through 970 chapters nationwide.
Phi Alpha Theta was established on March 17, 1921, at the University of Arkansas by professor Nels Cleven. Cleven had become convinced in his time at the university that a fraternity of scholars, which would accept men or women, was important for the study of history.
Pi Delta Phi
UC’s Sharon Holczer was recently inducted into Pi Delta Phi, national French honor society.
Pi Delta Phi was founded as a departmental French honor society at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906, and was nationalized when the Beta Chapter was established at the University of Southern California in 1925.
The purpose of this society is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and Francophone literatures, to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world, and to stimulate and to encourage French and francophone cultural activities.
