I have had the opportunity in recent weeks to chat with a few different folks about various ongoing efforts in our local communities.
There was the conversation that led to the story on the Corbin Community Backpack Club a couple of weeks ago, a conversation that has me contemplating some sort of a retrospective piece on the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky, and there was the conversation that resulted in this week’s story about the local 4-H Club.
Honestly, I talk to people all the time who are tasked with leading groups, organizing events, planning projects, etc., and a common theme that keeps popping up is the need for more people to step in and contribute to these efforts.
Now, I understand from experience that taking on too much can quickly lead to burnout. For that reason I would not advise anyone to try to do too much, but I have always felt that if everyone, or at least most everyone, was willing to at least do a little, then it might go a long way in helping to prevent any one person in particular from feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved if you’re willing and able, trust me. Just ask your local elected officials, or your nearest church leader, or head down to wherever some charity work happens to be taking place. I guarantee you that you’ll find someone who can present you with some ideas on how you can help make a community event come to life. Or perhaps you’ll be given the chance to make a difference in the life of someone who could use a little help. At the very least, you’ll learn how you can help to spread the word about the positive and exciting things that are going on around us all the time.
So, I encourage you to look around, and at least consider some ideas about how you could lend a hand. I’m sure it’ll be greatly appreciated.
