It was a perfect fall day for Octoberfest and Cruise-In events this past Saturday

Date:

Weatherwise, Saturday proved to be a near perfect fall day with slightly cool temperatures in the morning making way for pleasant temperatures throughout the day for a few local events.

Turnout was great in downtown Corbin for the annual Octoberfest celebration, which was held in conjunction with the final Cumberland Valley Cruise-In of the season.

I think I attended all or pretty much all the Cumberland Valley Cruise-Ins this season. Turnout was great for each of them with several antique cars and trucks on display.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have always liked looking at antique cars. Vehicles from back in the 1950s and 1960s really had a lot of character to them. The hood ornaments alone on some of them were almost miniature statues. These are what I call works of art that I enjoy looking at.

Several people brought out their classic automobiles Saturday for the cruise-in, which was a nice supplement for Corbin’s Octoberfest. This year’s event had several vendors and a little something for everyone to enjoy.

There was the bounce house and bounce slide for the children in addition to the petting zoo, which proved to be very popular. For the older crowd, there were various craft and food vendors set up.

From opening to closing, there were numerous folks out for these events downtown.

A big thank you to the organizers of the car show and Octoberfest for making this year’s events a success. Most people don’t realize the countless hours that go into planning such events.

Saturday evening saw me head over to Corbin High School for the Knox-Whitley Humane Association’s 5K run/walk for homeless animals.

In all, about 100 people and several dogs, including some shelter dogs, turned out for this event, which raises money for the non-profit animal shelter. Yes, the shelter gets some donations from local governments, but it still has plenty of expenses in addition to that.

I know that the shelter can always use financial donations, cleaning supply donations and dog and cat food donations among other things. In addition, if anyone wants to donate a few hours of their time, I know that they can always use a little extra help cleaning up after the animals, feeding them, and so forth.

This might be a good place for high school and college students needing community service hours.

For more information about the shelter, call them at (606) 526-6925. The website for the shelter is knoxwhitleyhumane.org.

Now to switch gears and talk about a few other topics before I conclude this column.

  • Speaking of events, later this week the annual Gateway to the Cumberlands Jeep Jamboree will take place in Williamsburg with hundreds of Jeeps pouring into downtown Williamsburg before hitting offroad trails in southern Whitley County and northern Campbell County, Tennessee, Friday and Saturday mornings for some muddy fun. If you are here for the event, let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the community. You are picking a great time of year to visit southeast Kentucky providing you don’t have seasonal allergies like I do.
  • Congratulations to now former Williamsburg City Councilwoman Patty Faulkner, who recently resigned after being named assistant tourism director and recreation director. In other words, Faulkner, who has been involved with Williamsburg Little League programs volunteering for decades, will now get paid for what she used to do for free…LOL. The plan is also for her to eventually succeed Alvin Sharpe as Williamsburg Tourism Director, if he ever actually retires for good that is. (Believe it when I see it Alvin…LOL.)
