With profound love and respect, we remember the life of James E. Smith, 80, who passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. James was a man of profound kindness and deep consideration, whose warm and loving spirit touched the lives of those who had the privilege to know him. Known for his thoughtful nature, James had a distinct ability to make everyone around him feel special and cherished. He found joy in the simple things, such as the quiet calm of a morning hunting trip or the laughter-filled chaos of a family gathering. More than anything, James loved his family deeply and unconditionally, holding them close to his heart in every moment of his life.
James was a man of service, dedicating his life to helping others in times of need as an EMT on the first Ambulance Service serving Whitley County. This selfless act of dedication was a testament to his character and his unwavering commitment to his community. His devotion to his family was evident in his actions and words, and his impact on his family and community will not be forgotten.
James is survived by his children, Jimmy Smith and wife Jennifer of Williamsburg, KY and Kim Goins and husband Brent of Williamsburg, KY and daughter-in-law Helen Smith of Williamsburg, KY; his grandchildren, Brandon Grubb (Cass), Joshua Grubb (Mary), Katie Peace (Wade), Erika Dixon (Shane), David Smith (Ashliann), Taylor Ashurst (Mikey), Helen Smith, Carol Smith, Billy Jo Smith (Adriana), Eli Smith; 18 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Jackie Smith (June) of Williamsburg, KY, McKinley Smith (Cricket) of Williamsburg, KY, Kenneth Ray Smith of Williamsburg, KY; and his aunts, Shelby Powers, Doris Rogers, Buddy Brinson.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Alma Smith; his beloved wife, Jessie Smith; his sons, Billy and William Smith; and his brother, Russell Smith.
Funeral service was held on Sunday, October 26, with Rev. David Rider officiating. Following the funeral service, burial service was at the Smith Family Cemetery in Williamsburg.
