James “Matt” Matthew Smith, Colonel U.S. Army Reserve Retired, age 55, of Williamsburg, Kentucky departed this life on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at the Baptist Health in Corbin, Kentucky.
Matt was born on March 20, 1968 in Toledo, Ohio to Claude Eugene Smith and Carolyn R. (Parker) Smith.
He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Eugene Smith.
Matt was a member of Mt. Ash Baptist Church since about 1985, and Minister at the Locust Grove Baptist Church.
Matt is survived by his wife, Melissa Jo (Durham) Smith of Williamsburg, Kentucky; daughters, Annie Jo Smith and Mattie Beth Smith, both of Williamsburg, Kentucky; mother, Carolyn (Parker) Smith of Williamsburg, Kentucky; sisters, Robin Burr (Sam) of Richmond, Kentucky and Cindy Speicher (Greg) of Burleson, Texas; brother, Tim Smith (Melanie) of Williamsburg, Kentucky; nieces and nephews, Zack Burr (Hannah), Samantha Burr, Kyle Speicher (Jenna), Elizabeth Hester (Ryan), Brandi Rhoades (Jake), Brook Smith, Braylee Smith, Bronson Bates, and Griffin Bates; great-niece, Emarie Rhoades and baby Hester; mother-in-law, BeAuanna Durham; father-in-law, Ted Durham; and a host of other family and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral service was Saturday, April 8, at the Mt. Ash Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Carpenter officiating. He was laid to rest in the Claude Smith Cemetery at Mt. Ash.
Croley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
