The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is working in conjunction with management at Corbin Manor Apartments to hold an anti-bullying awareness program Thursday.
Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said management at the apartment complex off of American Greeting Card Road offered the use of the complex’s community room to host a series of programs
“They contacted us about starting to host programs there. We offered some suggestions of topics,” Acciardo explained adding that while bullying has not been an issue seen at the complex in great numbers, it is a community wide and nationwide problem.
The program, under the direction of Special Deputy Elizabeth Sparks, is being offered free of charge and is open to the public. It will begin at 5:30 p.m.
While the program will discuss the signs and symptoms parents may look for to determine whether a child is being bullied, it is information that may be beneficial to children.
“Children will be welcome as well,” Acciardo said.
Acciardo said the department is ready and willing to conduct similar programs anywhere in the county, provided a business, group or organization offers suitable space.
Other topics available include children’s self defense, women’s self defense, or a general session on safety geared toward young adults.
“Whatever is requested, we can formulate some kind of program,” Acciardo said.
