Lily man has case forwarded to Whitley Co. Grand Jury following Monday prelim

A Lily man, who was arrested last month in Corbin by the Laurel County Drug Interdiction Task Force, had his case forwarded to the Whitley County Grand Jury for consideration following a preliminary hearing in Whitley District Court Monday morning.

After the hearing, his bond was lowered from a $25,000 cash bond to a $10,000 partially secured bond, according to court officials.

James Dakota Mayfield, 39, was arrested on May 20 at an Adkins Street residence in Corbin and charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine) and possession of marijuana, according to his arrest citation and a Laurel County Drug Interdiction Task Force release.

According to his arrest citation, on May 16 police made a controlled buy at an Adkins Street residence where Mayfield allegedly sold a substance believed to be cocaine. On May 20, police served a search warrant at an Adkins Street residence and found a bag with a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana inside his pants pocket.

Investigators reported seizing drugs, U.S. currency and a car from the search at the residence, according to the release.

Mayfield was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center but had been released on bond as of 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Gary Jordan is the case officer. Other task force members involved in the case include Laurel Sheriff’s Detectives Bryon Lawson and Jake Miller, Laurel Drug Interdiction Unit Justin Taylor, and Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Smith.

Agencies assisting with the investigation and arrest included: Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Corbin Police Department, Barbourville Police Department.

Drug investigations will continue by the Laurel County Drug Interdiction Task Force.
