Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies showed Saturday that, even when driving more than 120 mph, you can’t outrun the police radio, arresting a Lincoln County man who had fled from Madison County Sheriff’s deputies.
Calain A. Myers, 18, of Crab Orchard, was arrested after Kentucky State Police stopped Myers’ Dodge Avenger near Exit 25 by deploying spike strips.
Myers was charged with speeding – 26 mph over the limit, first-degree fleeing or evading police, eight counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, no operator’s license and reckless driving.
“Deputies noted that the driver only had a learner’s permit,” said Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer.
Madison County Sheriff’s deputies contacted area law enforcement concerning a Dodge Avenger traveling south on I-75 that refused to stop.
Madison County deputies called off the chase near Mount Vernon.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. Laurel County deputies located the vehicle, clocking it at speeds in excess of 105 mph.
“Laurel Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop the vehicle utilizing emergency equipment,” Acciardo wrote. However, the vehicle continued southbound on I-75 at speeds over 120 mph weaving in and out of traffic and passing vehicles in the emergency lane.
As the the chase continued south toward Whitley County, Acciardo said Laurel County deputies contacted state police, Corbin Police and Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies.
Myers was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
Acciardo said additional charges were filed in Madison County.
