No plans for Corbin to get new post office in the near future

Date:

An official with the United States Postal Service (USPS) has confirmed that there are currently no plans in place to relocate the Corbin Post Office to a new location.

Susan Wright, a spokesperson for the USPS in Louisville, said recently that no new building projects are currently being planned for the Corbin area, despite the fact that the Postal Service had been actively searching for a location in late 2020.

A December 2020 News Journal report stated that a letter had been posted in the lobby of the Corbin Post Office expressing the intent of the post office to relocate because, “the current Corbin, KY location is no longer cost-effective to conduct our ongoing operation.”

Per the report, the letter went on to explain that “the relocation project will consist of procuring a suitable substitute location, preparing the new location for use as a post office, and then transitioning the retail services to the new location.”

Typically, the USPS would schedule a public meeting to discuss changes like this, but due to the ongoing threat related to the COVID-19 pandemic at that time, large gatherings were not permitted. For that reason, the Postal Service posted all required information in the lobby of the Corbin Post Office, and said that the same information would be mailed to members of the community.

At the time of the News Journal report in December 2020, many community members were saying that they had not yet received that information in the mail.

A 30-day comment period was opened for members of the community to make their voices heard concerning the relocation project, and at the time, Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus was quoted as saying she was hopeful that citizens would take advantage of that opportunity.

Now, two-and-a-half years later, Razmus is saying that, despite what she thinks was a good response to the comment period, she is confused as to why there are suddenly no plans for Corbin to get a new post office facility.

“For some reason, all of a sudden, the plug got pulled and I can’t get to the bottom of it,” Razmus explained. “I have contacted everybody I know to contact, and I’m just not getting any answer other than they’re not doing any new facilities.”

The current Corbin Post Office was built in 1970, and is located at 301 Roy Kidd Ave.
