Johnny Sasser of Keavy is in serious condition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center following a head-on collission on American Greeting Card Road Tuesday afternoon.
According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Don Trosper, public affairs officer at Post 11 in London, the wreck occurred about 12:20 p.m. when Bailey Steele, 21, of Corbin lost control of her Chevrolet Impala, crossed the centerline near Corbin Manor Apartments, striking the pickup truck driven by Derrick Robinson, 22, of London.
"Steele stated she was avoiding a red GMC, Sonoma, pickup that had pulled into her path from the apartment complex," Trosper stated.
West Knox firefighters had to cut off the top of Robinson’s pickup truck in order to extricate Sasser, who was conscious and talking at the time. He was taken by ambulance to the parking lot of the former American Greeting building and then airlifted to UK.
Robinson and Steele, along with one passenger from each of their vehicles, Michael Gallagher, 23, of Corbin, who was also riding in the pickup and Adam Senters, 21, of Flatlick, who was with Steele, were all taken to St. Joseph Hospital in London for treatment of their injuries.
Trosper said neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be factors in the crash.
The driver of the Sonoma remained at the scene and gave a statement to police.
Trooper Lloyd Cochran is in charge of the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper John Barnett, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County and West Knox Fire Department.
