It has been a busy month for the Corbin High School golf program…
First was a special co-ed tournament that both the Redhounds and Lady Hounds competed in in Lee County, Virginia. The event consisted of 19 teams and 92 total golfers. Corbin finished fourth overall, with Makena Myatt finishing sixth overall as an individual competitor.
CHS boys coach Joe Roberts commented that his top three golfers – Brady Webb, Ethan Gambrel, and Clay Botner – are continuing to get better as the summer concludes and we officially enter into the fall season.
Roberts commented that the co-ed tournament in Jonesville was a first for the CHS golf program. He expressed great excitement over the event, saying he would like to continue doing it each year. While there, the Redhounds and Lady Hounds had/will have the opportunity to compete against some of the top golfers in our neighboring state.
Lady Hounds win 2A regional
Just last week, Coach Austin Reynolds’ Corbin Lady Hounds made the trip to Wasioto Winds in Pineville and walked away as Kentucky 2A regional champs.
“Great team effort,” Reynolds commented. “We worked the ball around the course exceptionally well. Makena shot a personal best today (68), and was lights out. [We] really could not have asked more out of her! Kalyn [Watkins] played extremely well, and did exactly what we needed her to do in order to win. Her game is growing and getting better and better every single day. Brooke Kfoury played exceptionally well. She showed a ton of improvement from the last couple times, and really shined off the tee box and when working her way in on the approach shots. Paige [Kfoury] did really well. She worked the ball well around the course, and so did Kylie [Cuel].”
Wasioto Winds posted about the event on their Facebook page, saying, “Congratulations to the Corbin Lady Hounds (377) and Rockcastle boys (290) on their 2A championship titles today. Clay County was runner up in both team competitions. Makena Myatt posted a tourney best with a 68, and Zeke Fain led the boys with a 69. Lily Smith and Harley Jackson also qualified for state for the ladies and Talan Marcum and Ben Hembree also qualified for the boys. The course was in amazing condition thanks to the golf maintenance staff. Special Thanks to Coach Brad Sizemore [of Bell Co.] for hosting.”
The Kentucky 2A state championships will be determined in the coming weeks. For more information, visit www.kentucky2achampionships.org.
