It is Nibroc week in Corbin, four days of fun filled activities. I am probably one of the few who are left that attended the first Nibroc Festival. I remember the carnival which was setup at Seventh and Main streets.

In the beginning, the festival was mostly a community affair with downtown stores decorating their windows and people dressing up in old fashioned clothes. A contest was held to name the event and Nibroc, Corbin spelled backwards, was chosen.

As the festival began to grow it moved to several different locations before finally settling again in the downtown area, first on Depot Street and then 22 years ago on Main Street. That was when Nibroc celebrated its 50th anniversary and the City of Corbin celebrated its 100th anniversary.

That festival remains as one of my favorites. The weather that week was perfect, not blazing hot in the daytime like it is now.

We had many daytime activities. A big tent was set up at Nibroc Park and it served as a place to eat and have contests. At night musicians took the stage, and the entertainment was excellent.

That year we had Corbin’s own, the late Gary Edwards performing on stage, and he was great. Also, East Bernstadt’s favorite son and the popular comedian Carl Hurley performed. Corporate sponsors, as well as the Tourism Commission, contributed to make it one of the best.

More information about this year’s festival is in this edition of the News Journal. We hope you enjoy all the activities.

Last year we published the 100th year magazine of Corbin Football. We are offering a special for Nibroc. A rack will be placed near the locomotive display on Depot Street with copies of the magazine priced at $1.00, a $4.00 saving. Bring four quarters and get your copy!
