SEASON OPENER

Date:

The Corbin Lady Redhounds opened the 2010-’11 season on the road at Monticello Monday night with a loss to the Lady Trojans, 44-37.

Corbin kept the game close and led 5-3 on a Hayley Smith 3-pointer early in the game, but was outscored 11-3 in the final four minutes and was never able to regain the lead.

The Lady Redhounds hit only 14.7 from the field in the first half, 5-of-34 as they trailed at the half, 23-13.

The Lady Redhounds came out much better in the third quarter and cut the lead to seven (26-19) when Miranda Wilson nailed two baskets and Shai Roaden scored for Corbin. The Lady Redhounds’ defense held the host without a field goal for the first four minutes; the lone point came at the free throw line where senior Cortney Morrow hit one of two free throws.

Smith had a chance to pull Corbin within five, but missed two free throws at the 2:46 mark. Monticello (1-0) responded with a Morrow three-pointer and a basket by Mariah Hughes to lead 31-22 at the end of the third period.

Marrow put the Lady Trojans ahead 33-22 with the first basket of the fourth quarter before Kayla Wilson scored at the 6:20 mark. Corbin tried to make a quick run as Roaden hit a 3-pointer to slice the lead to six (33-27). The Lady Redhounds had a couple of chances to cut into the lead but missed their next three shots before Malesha Hughes had back-to-back baskets sending the host on top, 37-27.

Corbin refused to quit as Coach Jennifer Parsons called a timeout with 4:35 left in the game and regrouped. A pair of free throws a minute later by Miranda Wilson and a basket by Roaden cut the lead down to six once again, 37-31.

Monticello held off the Lady Redhounds from the free throw line, hitting 7-of-11 in the final three minutes. The free throw line wasn’t kind to the Lady Redhounds as Corbin connected on 5-of-12 for the game while Monticello tossed in 11-of-22.

Roaden led the Lady Redhounds with 12 points while Smith scored in double figures with 10 points; Morrow led all scorers with 17 points.

The Lady Redhounds will play Somerset Saturday in the Monticello shootout at 4:45. They will be at Bell County Monday night.
