With the approach of Veterans Day Monday, a handful of local Veterans Day ceremonies and activities are planned around Whitley County. Here is a partial list of events that are known to the News Journal.
Whitley County High School
Whitley County High School (WCHS) is inviting all military veterans to attend a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8, at the school.
The morning will start off at 8 a.m. in the Colonel Cafe with a free breakfast for veterans, which will be provided by the school’s culinary program. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place starting at 9 a.m. in the Charles M. Lawson Gymnasium.
“In recognition of the heroes in our community, we would like to invite all military veterans to attend the ceremony to commemorate the great bravery and valor they have shown for the people of our nation,” the program wrote in an announcement. “We are honored to host this yearly ceremony to revere the innumerable things they have done for us and our country.”

Whitley County High School is located at 350 Boulevard of Champions in Williamsburg.
Williamsburg Independent School
The Williamsburg Independent School choir and band will be holding a patriotic concert in honor of local veterans during a ceremony that starts at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, in the school gymnasium.
Local veterans are invited to attend.
Corbin Primary School
Corbin Primary School will hold a veterans drive thru parade on Monday, Nov. 11, starting at 10 a.m. at 3551 Fifth Street Road in order to honor “all who served.”
Veterans will drive through the parade route as 800-plus junior Redhounds turnout to honor them. All veterans are welcome. Participants are asked to enter through the main entrance.
Corbin Garden Club
The Corbin Garden Club will be holding a Veterans Day tribute on Monday, Nov. 1, at 11:30 a.m. at Corbin City Hall, which is located at 805 S. Main Street. The ceremony will be by the Blue Star Memorial Marker.
“A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to love and sacrifice for the common good,” a flier for the event reads.
The event is sponsored by the Corbin Garden Club, which is a member of the Garden Club of Kentucky Inc. and the National Garden Clubs Inc.
Whitley County Extension Service
The Whitley County Cooperative Extension Service will be holding its annual Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Extension Office in Goldbug.
Veterans and their families will receive a free chili dinner, dessert and drinks.
Veterans are asked to call (606) 549-1430 to register and communicate the total number of guests coming in their party.
