Students with local ties achieve various recognitions

Date:

Various students with local ties have recently been inducted into honor societies at their respective institutions of higher learning, received departmental awards, or have received various other forms of recognition, including:

 UC Emma McPherson English Award

Hollyann Lewis has been honored with the University of the Cumberlands’ Emma McPherson English Award.

Lewis is double majoring in English/creative writing and history. Receiving the award has increased Lewis’ confidence in her abilities.

“I want to follow my mother’s footsteps in academia,” she explained. “She set an example for me to follow, and these awards demonstrate that I am able to do so with all glory and thanks to God.”

Lewis’ future plans involve working towards an MAT at Cumberlands.

UC Milton Murphey Missions Service Award

Xiang “Nemo” Li, of Williamsburg, has been honored with the University of the Cumberlands’ Milton Murphey Missions Service Award.

Li is majoring in Christian studies. He chose this major because he wants to know more about the Bible and be equipped to share with people about Jesus.

Receiving the Milton Murphey Missions Service Award has been an honor for Li.

“I hope what I did with my time here reflected who Jesus is and helped others to want to know him more and make him known,” Li stated. “This award will encourage me to continue doing good work for Christ, my Lord and Savior.”

His future plans involve working full-time in ministry.

“If God does not open that door, I would like to work a job and do ministry on the side. I believe that’s what God wants me to do,” Li said.

EKU Phi Kappa Phi

Corbin’s Kaylie Farmer was recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, at Eastern Kentucky University.

Farmer is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines. Its mission is to ‘cultivate a community that celebrates and advances the love of learning.”

Lindsey Wilson Study-Abroad

A Whitley County student participated in a study-abroad experience at Lindsey Wilson College.

Zachariah Lawson, an English and Christian Ministries double-major from Williamsburg, was one of 15 Lindsey Wilson students selected to travel to the United Kingdom in May as part of an immersive study-abroad program at Harlaxton College, an experience that combined academic exploration, cultural exchange and personal growth.

During their nine days abroad, students visited the historic cities of London, Lincoln, York and Cambridge while based at Harlaxton. Harlaxton is a Victorian manor and the University of Evansville’s study-abroad center, located in Grantham, England, which is about three hours north of London.

Beyond sightseeing, the program served a deeper purpose: introducing students to global learning experiences that build cultural awareness, personal confidence and academic growth.

Lindsey Wilson College is a vibrant liberal arts college in Columbia, Kentucky.
