Teenager charged with assaulting great grandmother

Date:

A Whitley County teenager is facing a felony assault charge for allegedly assaulting her 72-year-old great-grandmother.

About 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Lennon responded to an altercation at a Goldbug residence where a 13-year-old female had allegedly physically assaulted her great grandmother.

The incident stemmed from an argument over use of an iPad, according to officials from the sheriff’s department.

“She beat her up,” said Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell when asked for details on the attack. “She even knocked her down and sat on her.”

When Lennon arrived at the scene, the victim had visible injuries to her face and head and Whitley County EMS was called due to the extent of her injuries.

Lennon later learned that the great grandmother was transported by ambulance from Baptist Health Corbin to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for additional treatment.

Harrell said the woman was released from the hospital Thursday.

Lennon took the juvenile into custody charging her with second-degree assault. She was lodged in the Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Center.

Harrell said teenager is too you to be tried as an adult.

Deputy Joe Prewitt assisted with the investigation.
