The trade deadline for MLB was Monday and a lot of teams made moves. Some trades made really big headlines while others were not talked about as much. Here are in my opinion the winners and losers of the trade deadline.
First, the Cubs get Kevin Gausman and the Blue Jays get Brett Bateman and Ty Southisene. The Cubs, for this trade, get an A- and the Blue Jays get a C-.
The Cubs were in need of a starting pitcher and the two time all star in Gausman really helps the starting rotation.
The reason that the Blue Jays get a C- is because the rotation isn’t very strong and trading away one of your better starters does not help that. What your getting back in return is two position players that don’t pitch. The Cubs really cashed out on this trade getting a really good pitcher for prospects.
Next, the Braves get Tyler Mahle for Anthony Molina. In this trade, the Braves get a B+ and the Giants get a D.
The Braves this year have had a not top tier rotation. Chris Sale is the only one with an ERA under 3, and Tyler Mahle helps the rotation out a lot.
The Giants this season already have one of the weakest starting rotations in baseball with one guy that has an ERA under 4 and trading away one of the better starters in the rotation destroys it. The Braves won this trade by improving the rotation that has struggled besides Chris Sale.
After the Mahle trade, the Phillies got Louis Arraez in exchange for Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair. For this trade, both the Phillies and the Giants get a B.
The reason the Phillies get a B is because this trade helps the team out a ton at the second base position by getting one of the best contact hitters in all of baseball. The Giants get a B because this trade helps out the future rotation for the Giants.
Finally, this is the trade that everyone has been talking about, the Dodgers get Tarik Skubal and the Tigers get Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith.
In this trade, the Dodgers get an A+ and the Tigers get a F-. The Dodgers won this trade big time getting the two time Cy Young winner for 3 prospects, and with Shohei Othani questionable to pitch, this is the perfect player for the Dodgers.
The Tigers on the other hand completely destroyed their team in this trade. They gave away one of the best pitchers in baseball for a few prospects.
In conclusion, some teams made their teams much better with trade while some made their teams much worse. Some teams made balanced trades while others made trades that were very one sided. While some teams made small market deals, others made big blockbuster trades. This is my report card for four trades that were made at the trade deadline.
