Truck reported stolen from UT traced to Lily

Date:

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies recovered a truck reported stolen from the University of Tennessee Monday and arrested a Lily man in connection with the theft.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies arrested Pearl Smith, 64 after using GPS tracking information provided by the university to locate the 2012 Chevrolet 3500 heavy duty pickup truck on his property on McClure Bridge Road off of East Ky. 1223.

Acciardo said UT Police contacted the sheriff’s department earlier Monday that the pickup truck had been tracked to Laurel County.

Acciardo said deputies are still working to determine how Smith came to possess the pickup.

Smith has been charged with one count of receiving stolen property of the value of $10,000 or more as the value of the truck and the tools and equipment in/on it was estimated at more than $50,000.

Smith has been lodged in the Laurel County Correction Facility where he is being held without bond.
