Two people were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Sunday when they were thrown from their motorcycle after hitting a car on Master Street in Corbin.
Corbin Police Sgt. Jason Moore said Matthew Monhollen, 29 of Corbin and Courtney Gatliff, 29, of Williamsburg both suffered broken bones in the wreck. Monhollen has a broken leg that required surgery to insert a steel rod. Gatliff has a broken collarbone.
In addition, both suffered road rash, bumps and bruises.
According to Moore, the wreck happened about 8 p.m. when Megan Terrell tried to make a left turn from Old Barbourville Highway onto Master Street. As Terrell made the turn, she collided with Monhollen’s Kawasaki Ninja that was traveling east on Master Street.
"It was a head-on collision, but it was at an angle," Moore said.
Monhollen and Gatliff flew off the bike, landing about 15 feet from the point of impact.
Monhollen and Gatliff were taken by ambulance to the old Lynn Camp High School Football field where a landing zone was established for the helicopter.
Moore said Master Street was closed to traffic for about an hour as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.
Corbin Fire Department and Knox County EMS assisted at the scene.
Officials at the University of Tennessee Medical Center said Monhollen is in stable condition. They were unable to provide an update on Gatliff.
