W’burg Police warn of recent phone scam

Date:

Area residents should be aware of a new scam that could lead to the fraudsters obtaining a cell phone on your dime.

According to a release from the Williamsburg Police Department, a complaint was received last week regarding such a scam, in which someone received a call from a person impersonating an AT&T representative. The scammer requested the person provide their account security code during the call, which would allow anyone who knows it access to the account.

The victim later learned that a new phone had been illegally ordered on their phone plan. Once the police were notified, an investigation was performed. Police learned that the scammer had the phone shipped to a local motel in Williamsburg, which they were able to recover upon their arrival at the location.

The Williamsburg Police Department is asking residents to be aware of this and other scams like it and to be hyper vigilant in who you give out any personal information to.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
