Whitley girls fall

Date:

Whitley County coach Larry Anderson felt his team gave up too many easy shots in the fourth quarter as Garrard County took a game from the Lady Colonels, 48-44.
Junior center Kayla Haynes and sophomore Stephanie McCullah helped push the Lady Colonels ahead in the first quarter 15-11 but the Lady Lions came back to tie the score at the half, 23-23.
The Lady Colonels took the lead in the third quarter but couldn’t get much of a lead on the Lady Lions. They led at the third stop, 31-29.
The teams picked up the pace in the fourth quarter as Garrard County outscored the Lady Colonels, 19-13.
Whitley County (4-3) missed some critical free throws in the fourth quarter that could have kept them in the lead. “We missed four in a free midway through the quarter and they went down and scored,” said Anderson.
“We didn’t shoot well from the floor,” he added. “We shot 33 percent. When you don’t shoot well it’s hard to get a win.”
“We just didn’t finish,” added Anderson, whose team was scheduled to play Franklin County last night in the consolation bracket.
Haynes led all scorers in the game with 16 points.
