Woman attacked in woods with baseball bat

Date:

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is investigating allegations that a man beat a woman with a baseball bat in a wooded area near Corbin last Friday evening.

The incident apparently occurred at about 7:00 p.m. in the woods near Dorthae Road about nine miles south of London.

Deputy Rick Cloyd was dispatched to the complaint. When he got to the scene he learned from the 36-year-old female victim that her baby’s father was responsible for the assault.

She was transferred to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment of her injuries, and later transferred by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Police said she suffered injuries to her head, face and legs.

Though police have not identified the alleged suspect, the victim’s family claims that David Stewart Jr. is to blame for the assault. Stewart was arrested and lodged in Laurel County Detention Center just a day before the assault on a warrant for failing to appear in court. According to the jail’s inmate record system, he was released on an unsecured bond just hours before the attack.
