Woman ejected in Byerly Road crash

Date:

A Rockholds woman was ejected from her vehicle after running off of Byerly Road Monday night.

Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said 21-year-old Nicole Mayne was taken to Baptist Health Corbin and then transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Mayne was reportedly traveling east near the railroad bridge about 10:45 p.m. when the Toyota Celica dropped off the left side of the road and overturned multiple times before coming to a rest in a ditch.

West Knox firefighters worked to stabilize Mayne until Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County arrived on the scene.

West Knox Fire Chief Darryl Baker said emergency personnel attempted to establish a helicopter landing zone to airlift Mayne to U.K.

“The helicopter couldn’t fly because of the fog,” Baker said.

Acciardo said Deputy Jake Miller and Deputy Shannon Jones are continuing the investigation and alcohol use has not been ruled out.

“We are looking at every aspect and that is one of the things we will be looking at as well,” Acciardo said. “That is something we do with every serious accident we work.”
