It was a big night for the Whitley County Colonels and Lady Colonels Tuesday, as both teams were able to secure important district wins over Corbin.
The girls took the court first inside Charles M. Lawson Gymnasium, with the Lady Colonels managing to avenge a loss to Corbin earlier this season by securing a 52-39 win in the rematch. The victory improves the team to an even 10-10 on the season, and puts them at 3-2 in district play. The Lady Hounds, meanwhile, fall to 10-7, 2-2.

Regular season competition between 50th District opponents continued Tuesday night with a pair of double headers in Corbin and London as the Redhounds and Lady Hounds played host to Whitley County and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets traveled to South Laurel.
South was dominant in both games against the Jackets, with the Lady Cards winning, 92-19, and the Cardinal boys winning, 79-12. The losses keep both Williamsburg squads winless in district play, but they will hope to have a better showing next Tuesday, Jan. 27, when they host Corbin in another double header.
The Corbin Lady Hounds improved their overall record to 9-6 Tuesday evening with a 60-42 victory...
This past Saturday, the Corbin High School gymnasium hosted a wrestling competition for the very first time. Not just any competition, but this year’s 2A Section 5 duals.
“The Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association puts it on,” CHS Head Coach Chuck Davis said of the duals, which included the Redhounds, Boyle County, Pulaski County, Wayne County, Madison Southern and the Whitley County Colonels.
When asked about his feelings on CHS finally getting the opportunity to host a wrestling event, Davis said, “We usually wrestle at the middle school, so this is the first time that anyone has set foot in here to wrestle. I love it. It is a good chance...
Tuesday night featured four 50th District contests as the Williamsburg Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets hosted their crosstown rivals from Whitley County and the Corbin Redhounds and Lady Hounds made the short trip north to play at South Laurel.
It was a tough night for Jacket fans. First, the Williamsburg girls fell to 2-6 on the season, 0-1 in district play, after an 84-20 loss to the Lady Colonels. With the win, Whitley improves to 7-7, 1-0.
Both teams will face 50th District competition again this Friday evening, as Williamsburg will travel to face Corbin and Whitley County will play host to South Laurel.

This was Corbin’s second loss to the Lady Panthers this season, also falling in Barbourville back on Dec. 15 by a final score of 74-66.
It was a disappointing way to start off the New Year, but prior to tipoff of Saturday’s game Lady Hounds Head Coach Isaac Wilson commented that he was encouraged by what he saw from his team during the...
After four wins in four days at this year’s BSN Borderline Classic, the Whitley County Colonels now stand at 8-2 overall ahead of the Christmas holiday.
“I think we have a chance to be as good as anybody,” Head Coach Eric Swords said after his Colonels defeated Harrison County, 74-44, Monday night in the final game of the 2025 Borderline Classic. “Our kids are going to battle, play hard, and find ways to help us win.”
Swords and company welcomed 13 other teams into Charles M. Lawson Gymnasium between Friday and Monday for four days of exciting roundball action.
The Colonels themselves faced Green Valley Christian out of Nevada, Bethel (Ohio),...
After going 1-2 in the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel High School in recent days, the Corbin Redhounds now stand at 2-5 overall ahead of hosting this year’s Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament.
The Hounds showed growth throughout the Dribble Drive Challenge. Despite a 24-point scoring effort by junior Evan Ellis, they fell to Russell in their opening game Saturday, 65-55. They bounced back nicely against East Jessamine on Sunday, though, scoring their most points as a team to-date and securing a 78-47 victory. Senior Eli Pietrowski had a fantastic showing against the Jaguars, scoring 27 points.

The Corbin Redhounds’ 2025 season concluded last Friday night in the most heartbreaking manner imaginable. After battling tooth-and-nail on a freezing cold night in enemy territory, Coach Luke Salmons’ squad found themselves in a position to punch in a late score and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Or so they thought, as did everyone else who was in attendance or watching at home.
Unfortunately for Salmons and company, a controversial decision by the officiating crew negated what clearly looked to be a fumble recovery by the Redhounds. Instead of Corbin taking over possession with good field position and ample time on the clock, the ball was instead given back...
While this will be his first experience as a head coach, Williamsburg High School Boys’ Basketball Coach Brandon Bargo is no stranger to basketball or basketball at small schools.
Bargo is a 2016 graduate of Barbourville High School. He attended Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) where he graduated in 2019. He worked for the men’s basketball program at EKU from 2016-2020.
“It was the greatest time. I met so many valuable people, so many people that did a lot of good stuff for me,” he said.
After that, Bargo landed an assistant coach job at Berea College for one year, which happened to be during Covid.
“That was a unique experience. We didn’t have...
