A Corbin High School student’s local winning essay will soon be competing for a possible state prize.

The Kentucky Division of Conservation and Kentucky Farm Bureau annually sponsor the Jim Claypool Art and Writing Contest. Locally, the Whitley County Conservation District sponsors the competition each year.

The writing contest is open for students in grades 6 – 12, and the topic changes annually. This year’s theme was “The Ground Beneath our Feet.”

The Whitley County Conservation District presented CHS Junior Jessica Owens with a $100 scholarship for winning the local competition.

Her winning essay has moved forward to the state competition and the state winner will be announced in early February.
