In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November, Baptist Health Corbin is proud to participate in an awareness campaign in cooperation with the American Cancer Society to educate the public about the importance of early lung cancer screening.
With lung cancer remaining the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, early detection through low-dose CT (LDCT) screening has the potential to save thousands of lives each year.
Lung cancer often shows no symptoms in its early stages, which is why screening is critical for high-risk individuals — especially adults aged 50–80 who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years and have a 20 pack-year smoking history.
According to the American Cancer Society, LDCT scans can reduce the risk of dying from lung cancer by up to 20%.
“Early detection is our best defense against lung cancer,” said Brandie Stamper, RN, Patient Navigator. “With proper screening, we can catch lung cancer at a treatable stage, drastically improving survival rates.”
Key facts:
• Lung cancer is responsible for about 1 in 5 cancer deaths.
• Only 5.8% of eligible Americans are currently getting screened.
• LDCT screening is quick, non-invasive, and proven to reduce mortality.
Baptist Health Corbin urges individuals to speak with their healthcare provider about whether lung cancer screening is right for them.
Baptist Health Corbin will offer a special screening day on Saturday, November 8 at Baptist Health London Imaging & Diagnostics located at 1406 W. 5th St. London. This event is by appointment only. To confirm if you are eligible and to schedule your appointment call (606) 523-8772.
