BIG LOSS

Date:

Coach Jerry Herron’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets fell to 2-2 after a tough, 40-12, loss to the undefeated Wayne County Cardinals at Findlay-Legion Field Friday night.

Turnovers and the inability to stop Wayne County’s senior quarterback, Tyler Guffey, were the Jackets’ downfall, but they played the Cardinals tough, giving themselves plenty of chances to make some big plays, and keeping the game more interesting than what the final score would indicate.

“We had our chances all throughout the game,” Coach Herron said in his postgame comments.  “We just didn’t do a good job executing.  It’s very frustrating.”

Williamsburg quarterback Dalton Sizemore threw for two touchdowns on the night, but was also intercepted a total of five times by the Wayne County defense, three times by senior defensive back Alan Brown.  Brown returned one of those picks 75-yards for a Cardinal score with 10:49 in the third quarter.

Guffey ended the night with 76-yards rushing, including two touchdowns, and 227-yards passing, including one touchdown.  The two remaining scores for the Cards came courtesy of a Junior Ruiz 24-yard touchdown run with 8:55 left in the first half, and a James Barnes eight-yard run with 1:42 left in the game.  Ruiz also handled the kicking duties for Wayne County, adding on four extra points throughout the night.

“We knew exactly what they were going to do,” said Herron.  “We knew they had some big kids, that they could throw and run the ball well, and they came over here and did just that.”

“It’s not the end of the world.  We’ve won games, and we’ve lost games.  There are a lot of positives on this team, but there are also some negatives.  We’ve definitely got problems that need fixing.  Some of our players aren’t pulling their weight right now, and I have to do a better job of preparing them to play at the level that we need to be playing at.”

The Jackets have a bye this week, which comes at a good time.  The team can focus on nursing some injuries and regrouping as they prepare to face off against Harrison County at home next week.
