I thought I knew what cold felt like until last week, but the blast of frigid arctic air that hit our region late Thursday night taught me otherwise.
Like many others, when the sun went down last Thursday I was wondering if things were really going to get as bad as some weather reports had been predicting. I had expected more precipitation than we had seen up to that point, so I started thinking, “Maybe we wake up tomorrow and things aren’t that bad after all…”
As it turns out, we did receive additional precipitation during the overnight hours Thursday, which made for slick driving conditions once the temperatures plummeted. And...
I have a ton of respect for the performers in all of our local drama clubs. I cover a lot of sports for the News Journal, and while I am always impressed with the amazing feats of athleticism that our young athletes are able to pull off on the court and/or field, there is just something different about watching kids on stage, nailing a dance routine, successfully hitting every note in a song, and memorizing every line in a play that lasts over an hour.
It takes a lot of talent to do this, and I’m sure it requires countless hours of practice as well. Frankly, I don’t see how...
Local sports has been front and center for me in recent weeks, with the Corbin Redhounds making their historic run to another state championship title game and the 2022-23 high school basketball season tipping off this week.
As for our annual basketball season preview section, that was originally scheduled to run in this week’s edition, but with the Corbin football team making an appearance in the Class 4A state finals this Friday we have decided to push that back one week, to Dec. 7, so that we can do something to commemorate this special occasion.
Just a few words on the 2022 football Hounds…
To say that this team is special would...
I travel the stretch of Falls Highway in south Corbin between Oak Grove and the I-75 overpass on almost a daily basis. Most times I head straight through towards downtown, but many times I jump on the interstate to head towards either Williamsburg or London.
Lately, things have started changing pretty drastically along this stretch of highway as preparations are being made to begin the widening project that will expand the road from two lanes out to five in some spots.
Some of the changes are welcome, as old, dilapidated structures that have been eyesores for years are finally being removed. Other changes have been quite jarring, however, such as the...
Last week I was thrilled to come across a Facebook post congratulating the staff of the Paws’ Print, Corbin High School’s student newspaper, on the printing of their first physical issue in many years. I immediately reached out to Niki Junker, who heads up the school’s journalism program, to get more details.
According to Junker, this marks the first time in well over a decade that Corbin has produced an actual, physical newspaper. For years, any sort of student reporting has apparently appeared on the school district’s website, but Junker is proud of the fact that her students have produced a tangible product for their classmates to enjoy.
I am excited...
In recent months I have greatly enjoyed covering the regular weekly meetings of the Corbin Rotary Club. Not only do I get the chance to fill up on some great food at David’s Steakhouse, but I also have the opportunity to hear special guest speakers talk about a number of important subjects affecting our local communities.
Since the summer, I have heard a representative from the Kentucky Department of Transportation speak about current and future road work going on in the region. I have heard a representative from Grace Health speak about how the new medical facility located in the former Corbin K-Mart building is going to serve patients all...
This past Saturday I had the opportunity to visit the Whitley County Historical and Genealogical Society’s Heritage Day event in Williamsburg. Although I have driven by the building many times over the years, this was actually my first time going inside and checking out the museum.
I was not disappointed.
During my brief visit (I was feeling a little under the weather, so I didn’t stay as long as I would have liked), I got to speak to several folks about the museum, many of the items found inside, and what I might be able to uncover during future visits.
One area of the museum that I am very interested in exploring...
There’s been a lot of big things happening in the world of local sports in recent days, including Corbin Redhound legend Frank Selvy being inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
To get more info on Selvy’s upcoming induction, check out the Hall of Fame page at www.collegebasketballexperience.com. According to the site, the official induction ceremonies are to be held on November 20 in Kansas City. Accompanying him in the Class of 2022 will be John Beilen (winningest coach in Michigan history), Jim Calhoun (3x national championship coach), Richard Hamilton (Connecticut, Detroit Pistons), Jerry Krause (NAIA Hall of Fame coach), Lon Kruger (longtime coach in the NCAA and...
Anyone who followed along with our recent NIBROC Festival activities knows that we had planned on also making an appearance with a booth at the 2022 Old Fashioned Trading Days Festival, taking place this Thursday-through-Saturday in downtown Williamsburg. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, we will unfortunately not be able to set the booth up this year.
My apologies to anyone who was maybe thinking of coming by, but one of our reporters, Timothy Wyatt, will be out for the remainder of the week as he takes care of some things at home after the unexpected passing of a family member earlier this week.
Our thoughts and prayers are certainly...
In early February of 2020, none of us had any idea that life would soon change forever due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Very soon, businesses would be disrupted, church pews would empty, and schools would send students home to learn via e-mail and Zoom conference calls.
Another disruption caused by the pandemic was the cancellation of fine arts shows all over the globe, including right here at home. The Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky was in its 58th season in 2019-2020. The American Spiritual Ensemble had performed at First Baptist Church of Corbin on February 6. Little did the Association know, however, that it would not present another...
