With high school tennis and track and field state championships taking place in Lexington during the next couple of weeks, it has me thinking about the many KHSAA state championship events that I have had the opportunity to cover over the years.
I have been lucky enough to cover local teams competing in the boys and girls Sweet 16 basketball tournaments, I have stood on the sidelines at a few football state championship games, and I attended a baseball state championship tournament in 2018.
I have been to a state championship bowling meet, covered numerous cross country races at the Kentucky Horsepark, have followed soccer teams as they...

Things have been pretty straight forward over the past couple of weeks as I have been filling in as a part-time contributor here at the News Journal, but with district, region and state competitions all taking place during the course of the next month, the list of events to keep an eye on is about to increase pretty drastically.
For starters, we have high school baseball and softball postseason play now underway, which you can find details on by looking to my right. Last year one of our coverage area teams (Whitley County Baseball) made a run in the KHSAA state championship tournament. Will one of our...

It used to be right around this time of year that I would get a phone call or a visit from my good friend Jimmy Hendrickson, asking me to start running info in the newspaper letting folks know how they could sign up for the Annual Woodbine Rebels Softball Shootout.
The Shootout tournament was a yearly summer tradition that ran for nearly 50 years, all the way up until just recently, when plans moved forward for a major overhaul of the Miller Park facility off of Barton Mill Road in Corbin.
I remember the first Shootout that I attended. It was the summer of 2014, and I had...

Howdy folks, it’s good to see everyone again! For those of you who may not know me, I served as Sports Editor here at the News Journal from December 2013 until my departure in November of 2020. I’ve contributed to the paper’s news and/or sports coverage a few times since then, so you may recognize the name.
At any rate, I join the rest of the News Journal staff in wishing Dean Manning the very best in his future endeavors, and I am excited to now have the opportunity to fill in for a few weeks while long term plans get sorted out.
Of course, not having...
It was a different kind of Halloween for many different reasons this year, but all-in-all I think it will definitely go down as one of the most memorable of my life.
Our family dressed up as characters from the movie Toy Story, with me as Woody, my wife, Lindsey, as Bo Peep, our soon-to-be 8-year-old son, Connor, as Buzz Lightyear, and our two-year-old daughter, Olivia, as Jessie the Cowgirl.
The kids got to do some trick-or-treating at family members’ houses, and they brought home a ton of candy that we will probably still be working our way through until next spring.
The night before Halloween, on Fri., Oct. 30, Connor and I...
I was glad to hear the announcement from Governor Andy Beshear on Monday that his office would not be making any more recommendations on the start of in-person classes at this time. This means that on September 28, parents will definitely have the option to send their kids back to school.
As for what happens after that, we’ll see. But at least we know that, as things stand now, in-person lessons are just days away from finally being able to resume.
I’m lucky to have a wife who actually works in an elementary school. That means that my seven-year-old son has gone to work with her the majority of the time...
We have been on quite the journey since the coronavirus came along and changed all of our lives this past March.
For student-athletes, the up-and-down roller coaster of emotions has been nearly unbearable to watch, but we are now finally about to get back to sports in the Bluegrass State.
First we saw the girls’ Sweet 16 tournament get cut short, and the boys’ tournament cancelled altogether. Then we waited to see if spring sports would be able to be contested in a shortened season, only to watch as baseball, softball, tennis and track-and-field athletes were denied the opportunity to take the field or court.
Then we navigated a long, difficult summer...
I’m no mechanic, but lately I have been receiving a crash course in how to keep a 1940 model Chevrolet truck running. It’s been a very cool experience.
The truck, in all of its original glory, was completely restored by my grandfather. The story of how he came to own it is quite remarkable, but that will be left for another time. For now, suffice it to say that this classic vehicle is special in more ways than one, and now I am getting the opportunity to work on it, learn about it, and hopefully at some point in the very near future, show it off to folks at one...
As many of you already know, I have served as the Sports Editor here at the News Journal since late 2013. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much sports to be discussed lately thanks to COVID, but that should be changing soon.
In the near future we are hoping to bring you a 2020 high school football season preview section, same as we do each year. COVID numbers are beginning to level off again, and will hopefully begin to trend downward in the coming days, so I don’t think that anything is going to prevent fall athletics from being able to officially start on the current target date of September 9. With...
Inside last week’s paper was a special insert containing the names of the people, places and things that you, the News Journal readers, voted as People’s Choice in Corbin and Williamsburg for 2020.
Typically, we would announce these winners sometime in April/May, but due to COVID-19 we were forced to push the big reveal back a couple of months. Still, despite all the trouble that the virus has caused, we received a good number of votes this year, so a big “congratulations” goes out to everyone who was announced as a winner.
And if you weren’t announced as a winner? Well, don’t get discouraged! There’s always next year, and there are...
