Here we go again… Another election season is just about here, as the filing deadline for candidates seeking office in 2026 is set to expire on January 9.
We here at the News Journal have been keeping a close eye on who is filing for which seats in recent weeks, and we have been making a concerted effort to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date contact information for each of these individuals as we go along. This is imperative, as we will soon begin reaching out to inform candidates about important opportunities for advertising and future chances to participate in Q&A’s.
If you have filed to run for office in 2026...
I was left with a very optimistic feeling last week after chatting with Assistant City Manager Jacob Roan about plans for the City of Corbin to begin the work of developing a brand new comprehensive plan. You can read the story about this effort, and the grant funding that is making it possible, elsewhere in this week’s edition. What I’d like to do here, however, is share a few of my own personal opinions on the matter.
First of all, it was refreshing to hear what Roan had to say about plans to engage with the community in order to gain insight that will ultimately help make this new comprehensive...
Before I start, you need to go read the game recap story in this week’s edition. Go ahead, I’ll wait…
Did you read it? Okay, well, that fumble that was mentioned in there? It was totally a fumble. No question about it. I was standing right there, along with hundreds of other people, and I clearly saw what happened.
I have seen some gut-wrenching moments while covering local athletics for the past dozen years, but this? I believe this takes the cake, folks. It was bad, and I mean BAD.
Honestly, I don’t know what to say about the situation that hasn’t already been said. Go back and watch the video clips...
In case you weren’t already aware, we here at the News Journal are conducting a special holiday subscription food drive through December 23. It’s a great way to help some folks out this holiday season, while also helping yourself to a great deal on a subscription to the newspaper.
The guidelines are simple… just bring unexpired canned goods or non-perishable food items to our office, located at 215 N. Main Street in downtown Corbin. For every item that you drop off, you will receive a $1 discount on a new or renewal subscription. The only caveat is that there is a $10 limit on the discount. Feel free to bring...
B
oard meetings. Those two words rarely elicit an overly enthusiastic response. In fact, many would say that “bored meetings” may often be a more apt description.
When you hear about a board meeting, the mental images that are conjured probably include several people sitting around a table with some sort of an agenda placed in front of them. A numbered or bulleted list can be found on said agenda, and for 1-2 hours, each item on the list must be addressed according to proper procedure.
There is discussion. There are motions. Motions are seconded. Votes are taken. It all gets recorded in the minutes, there is adjournment, and everyone disperses.
Now, this...
We reached a major milestone in the Sherman household over the weekend as my son, Connor, turned 13.
I am extremely proud of Connor, who has always been a good kid and a great student. For the past two years, he has been a member of the band at Corbin Middle School, playing in the percussion section. He has also taken up playing the electric guitar at home, and has made incredible progress with it.
Admittedly, the pre-teen stage has not always been easy. In fact, many days have been quite difficult. We all navigated our way through it, however, and now we collectively prepare to embark on a new adventure...
In my time here at the News Journal, I have had the opportunity to witness several history-making achievements by our coverage area athletic programs. Many classic contests have taken place over the years with district championship titles on the line, and the same can be said for a long list of regional championship encounters as well.
I have also had the chance to watch many of our local student-athletes compete for statewide championships, with some being successful in their quests to bring state titles back home with them.
When I think back on all that has transpired, it is difficult to say which individual accomplishments were the most consequential. I can...
Since 2017, we at the News Journal have been able to partner with the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce to publish a quarterly magazine publication called Strictly Business. We hope that readers have found it interesting to get behind-the-scenes looks at many of our local area businesses. I can honestly say that it has been incredibly rewarding for me personally to get to write many of these stories.
Recently, I had the opportunity to take a tour of Stidham Cabinet and get the full story of their 50-year operation from the founder himself, Mr. James Stidham. The plant is located in Keavy, and while I have been there before, this...
It’s been a busy time at the Whitley County Fairgrounds, and the festivities this month are just getting started.
Last Wednesday, I took my daughter and her friend down to see the Great Pages Circus underneath the new open air structure, and I was blown away.
I have seen this particular circus perform in our local area before, and they always do a great job regardless of the venue. The fairgrounds provided the perfect setting, however, and you couldn’t have asked for better weather on the night of the show.
See some of the photos that I took while at the circus elsewhere inside this week’s edition.
On Saturday, I was back at...
For the past three years, the arrival of the fall season has meant live horse racing right here in Corbin, KY. If you have never seen the races for yourself at The Mint – Cumberland Run, then go ahead and mark your calendars right now, because you won’t want to miss out on the fun and excitement.
Racing will kick off at The Mint – Cumberland Run, located at 777 Winners Lane just off the Corbin Bypass, on Saturday, Oct. 11. On that day, The Mint will be partnering with WD Bryant ACE Hardware and Recteq Grills to present a special “Grill Off” event where visitors to the track will...
