Williamsburg Independent Schools students will have the chance to meet their classroom teachers during the Back to School Bash, which is scheduled for Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the school. In addition, students and parents can get important school year information and visit various community booths as they get ready for the start of the school year on Aug. 25. A Rockholds man, who allegedly told police “He possibly knew the truck was stolen” when he was arrested on Aug. 4 near Woodbine, has entered into a plea agreement on a lessor charge, according to court records. For the Corbin Redhound football program, a state championship run is not just a goal, it is an expectation. This season, the Redhound Faithful are celebrating 50 years since the 1976 state championship. “It's a great thing to honor and recognize,” said Corbin Redhound Head Coach Luke Salmons. “You know, they laid the groundwork for what we are today.” So, who are the Redhounds today? Corbin Redhound Volleyball alumni joined current members of the squad on August 13 for a scrimmage in the new Corbin Auxiliary Gym. The volleyball team also played a varsity and junior varsity scrimmage against Pulaski County ahead of the alumni game. On social media, the Corbin Redhound Volleyball team posted, “Getting to step onto that court and compete for the very first time was something special. What a privilege it is to call this place home!” The news gym is approximately 15,000 square feet and was built to be a multipurpose facility. As the election for Mitch McConnell’s senate seat draws closer, Sen. Rand Paul said he will continue to put an emphasis on debt reduction and affordability as Kentucky’s new senior senator. Ahead of National Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, Cumberland River Behavioral Health (CRBH) is hosting an overdose awareness event featuring Beverly Vance Aikins as its guest speaker. Aikins has 11 years in recovery, and her son happens to be the vice president of the United States. “No matter how you feel politically, J.D. Vance is from Eastern Kentucky and his mother was an addict,” said CRBH Director of Recovery Services Danielle Matlock. When Williamsburg City Councilman Loren Connell goes out campaigning and talks to people about what they want in Williamsburg, he said there is a common answer he often gets. “People are still after restaurants,” he noted. Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison said he hears people say every day the city needs to bring this or that to town, like new restaurants. “We don’t do that,” Harrison said about the city opening restaurants. The City of Williamsburg will probably have to borrow approximately $5.5 million from the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA) to pay for the remainder of its approximately $14.5 million water project. It hopes to start work on a portion of the project in approximately three months to start replacing some of the oldest waterlines in town. Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison told the Williamsburg City Council during its regular monthly meeting Monday that potentially two-thirds of the loan amount might be forgiven, which means the city would not have to pay it back. Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus epitomized what a small town festival like NIBROC is supposed to be about Friday night. Razmus was at a concert for The Wildflowers, which is a Tom Petty tribute band.
