The Whitley County volleyball team welcomed back several alumni on Aug. 6 ahead of its Red/Black scrimmage and player introductions. The team is coming off a win at the 2026 Bluegrass State Games. The Lady Colonels are looking for a fifth consecutive 13th Region title this season.

Mackenzie Lawson, a 25-year-old mother, wants the Williamsburg City Council to improve security and maintenance at Briar Creek Park. Lawson told the city council during its monthly meeting Monday she regularly sees groups of three to four men coming out of the woods around the park when her family goes there. Lawson has seen the men there between 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., she said in response to a question by once council member. A few months ago, she picked up a used condom there. The Whitley County Fairgrounds is getting a second bathhouse and best of all, it will be at no cost to the county. Whitley County Projects Director Amber Owens said approximately 18 months ago, Whitley County applied for a land and water conservation grant to help pay for construction of a second bathhouse. The grant is administered through the Kentucky Department of Local Government. Owens said the judge-executive’s office received notification Friday from the National Park Service it had been awarded a $130,000 grant. The total project costs are projected to be $260,000. Concerns about dogs running loose in the Highland Park area was one of the topics discussed during Monday’s monthly Williamsburg City Council meeting. Councilman Loren Connell said he has gotten a lot of phone calls about dogs in the area not being well managed. Connell noted responsible pet owners would be the thing at the top of the list of stuff to help, but he is not sure this is going to happen. Councilwoman Laurel Jeffries West said she has heard reports about dogs killing at least one cat and attacking a kitten. A total of 31 participants turned out Saturday morning for the 10th Annual Kayaking for Kids race along the Cumberland River. “We appreciate everybody being part of this great event. As was reported this week, in our nine years prior we raised over $250,000 for youth activities through this program. We appreciate everybody,” Whitley County Judge-Executive Pat White Jr. told participants prior to the race starting. Whitley County Projects Director Amber Owens said this year, the race raised over $22,000 in sponsorships plus some race day entry fees. Knox County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a fugitive in Corbin on Friday, who had been on the run since 2022, according to a Knox County Sheriff’s Office release. Knox deputies received information Floyd House, 36, of Lily, was working at a construction site on Higgins Branch Road in Corbin. He was located and arrested there without incident. House had been wanted in Elliott County on an unlawful transaction with a minor charge, according to the release. He was also wanted on a Clay County bench warrant for failure to pay the fine in a 2021 operating a motor vehicle under the influence case. In addition, he was wanted on a Laurel County bench...

Demolition of buildings gutted by the Jan. 20 downtown Williamsburg blaze will not be complete before Old Fashioned Trading Days rolls around Sept. 10-12, but officials are hoping enough of it gets done so Second Street can reopen in time for the festival. The work is expected to take approximately two months to complete. It will stop for Old Fashioned Trading Days, Mayor Roddy Harrison told the Williamsburg City Council during its regular monthly meeting Monday. A new trial date has been set for a Corbin man, who allegedly shot a Whitley County Farmer in January 2024. During an Aug. 3 hearing, Whitley Circuit Judge Dan Ballou scheduled a Jan. 13 trial date in the case of Michael Boyd Conner, 76, who is charged with murder in the Jan. 4, 2024, killing of Charles E. Ohler. The trial is expected to last three days. Ballou had previously scheduled a July 15 trial, but attorneys for both sides agreed to postpone the trial on July 2. Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison told the Williamsburg City Council Monday evening he is not aware of any plans by anyone to build a data center in Williamsburg. The topic came up during the council’s monthly meeting. Harrison said it takes approximately 400 acres of land to build a data center. Councilman Loren Connell said he does not think there is enough available space inside the city where one could be built. Harrison said this isn’t to say one could not be built outside the city limits, but he has not heard anything about one. The London-Corbin Airport Terminal will be getting a much-needed facelift thanks to $2 million in federal funding and another $2 million in state funding. During a ceremony Tuesday morning in the airport terminal, U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, who is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, presented the airport board and other local leaders with a ceremonial $2 million check for terminal renovation.
