Middle school students to compete at state Governor’s Cup competition

Seven local middle school students will be competing at the academic team Governor’s Cup state competition.  From Whitley County Middle School, Kambree Bunch, for composition and social studies; Reese Croley, for math assessment; Samuel Lemons, for social studies assessment; and Miles Leskiw, for math assessment, will all compete at the state competition.  Overall the Whitley County team placed third at the regional tournament bringing home the third-place award for quick recall and the fourth-place award for future problem solvers.  Whitley County Middle School’s academic team coach is Sarah Veach-Draper. Mr. and Miss Basketball crowned at Corbin game Monday evening

Jonathon Jackson and Kaila Stidham were crowned 2022 Mr. and Miss Basketball during halftime of the Corbin vs. Jackson County boy’s basketball game Monday evening.  Jackson is the son of Shawn and Lindsay Jackson. He escorted Sydney Blakenship during the homecoming events.  Stidham is the daughter of Jimmy and Crystal Stidham. Whitley County FFA travels to EKU

The Whitley County FFA Chapter traveled to Eastern Kentucky University for the Kentucky River Region Fall Field Day on Oct. 19. The chapter had individuals participating in tractor driving and land judging. Students competing in land judging looked at four sites on EKU’s farm. The land judging contest involves students judging the site based on its physical characteristics such as slope, erosion, depth, and drainage issues. Students then determine its best usage capabilities from these characteristics and what conservation recommendations they would make to that site to help benefit the land most.  Tractor driving consists of students properly operating and running a tractor through a driving course. As a teacher’s kid, the Fourth of July marked the beginning of the end of summer. Former Williamsburg resident appears in CNBC TV series “Super Heists”

Former Williamsburg Family Fitness owner and personal trainer Bill Allen appeared on the big screen once again as he portrayed the lead burglar in CNBC TV series “Super Heists” pilot episode called “All the President’s Money” Monday night.  Bill Allen, portrayed Amil Dinsio, an infamous burglar who, in collaboration with others, allegedly stole over $12 million of President Richard Nixon’s money from a bank vault in Laguna Niguel, California.  “It is the story of these guys out of Ohio that get a tip from a large mob boss. Local teachers named Valvoline Achievement winners

Two local teachers are vying for the honors of 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year. Morgan Preston, a teacher at Corbin Middle School, and Jodie Carnes, a teacher at Lynn Camp High School, were named semifinalists in the respective middle school and high school divisions.  Winners of the middle and high school Teacher of the Year awards, in addition to the overall 2022 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, will be announced in a virtual ceremony in September. “Now more than ever, we are seeing how essential teachers are to not only the educational needs of our children, but also their social and emotional well-being,” said Kentucky Commissioner of Education Jason E. Story behind prize winning photo

What started out as a college photo project has now resulted in a photography award for a Williamsburg man. Darrell Lovitt submitted a photo of his grandfather working in his shed to the annual Kentucky Living Magazine photo contest. Lovitt won first place in the contest’s ‘People’ category. “I was doing a photo project for college, and I had actually stayed with my grandfather and my grandmother and kind of followed their lifestyle,” said Lovitt. “They are kind of old school. Whitley County Fair festivities kick off with pageant

The Whitley County Fair Pageant crowned a new queen on Friday. Bella Webb, of Lexington, was awarded the crown. Above: Ella Gray was named Miss Congeniality; Makenzie Woods took home the award for evening gown; Madison Frye took home awards for first runner-up, best swimsuit and best interview; Webb was crowned Miss Whitley County Fair; and Nicole Roberts was named second runner-up. The miss competition took place on Friday with other groups, such as Little Miss and Mister, Miss Pre-teen and Teen Miss taking the stage on Saturday. Hannah Harrison, the 2020 Miss Whitley County Fair, was in attendance to help crown the winners.
