‘Burg Kiwanis club awards scholarships

Williamsburg Kiwanis Club President David Perry (far right) recently presented $500 scholarships to three deserving graduating seniors, including: Whitley County High School senior Dania Esser (far left), who received the Kiwanis Achievement Scholarship; and Williamsburg High School seniors Jazzlyn Threlkeld, who received the Harold Wortman Scholarship; and Nicholas Barman, who received the Henry ‘Babe’ Barton Scholarship.

2021 Governor’s Scholars announced

Whitley County High School Whitley County School District Superintendent John Siler presented the 2021 Governor’s Scholars recipients with a certificate for their accomplishments. Whitley County High School’s 2021 Governor’s Scholars include: Luke Baker, Rebecca Meadors, Leslie Monhollen, Samuel Hudson, and Jackson Leskiw. Corbin High School Corbin students selected to participate in the program include Patton Chandler, Melanie McWilliams, and Khushi Patel. These students will participate in the five week Governor’s Scholars Program at one of three college campuses. This summer, the campuses include Centre College, Morehead State University, and Bellarmine University.

Each year I lend my voice to the hundreds of singing spectators waiting for the horses to come out of the gate. As I sing along with the exited crowd, the beautiful words of My Old Kentucky Home, the song written by Stephen Collins Foster, bring tears to my eyes. Former May Day Queens reflect on the festivities

Like many other traditions, the May Day Festival has changed throughout the years. What used to be a large-scale, in-person production has been moved to a virtual event since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite the changes to the event, the grace and poise of the May Day Queens endures. At the end of the second week of May Day fundraising, Brianica Lynn Childress is in first place for May Day Queen, Mary Hope Jackson is in second place and in third place is Savanah Lynn Blankenship. Whitley Co. Players presents Alibis

The Whitley County Colonel Players will perform “Alibis” for general audiences on Friday at 7 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. at the school’s amphitheater. NSDAR chapter cleans gravesites

The William Whitley Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution rededicated and cleaned the gravesites of Captain Charles A. Gatliff (1748-1838) and his wife Christina McGuire Gatliff (1753-1807) following its regular monthly meeting on April 10 in Williamsburg, stated a press release from the chapter. Whitley Co. student named NHS Scholar

McKenzie Walters, a senior at Whitley County High School, has been named a National Honor Society (NHS) Scholar. According to the school’s Facebook page, “ has demonstrated a strong commitment to the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Walters will be the recipient of a NHS Scholarship.
