Williamsburg pharmacist went above and beyond for elderly man

(Letter to the Editor by Margaret Potter, Fort Myers, Florida) I have been gone from Southern Kentucky for approximately 59 years, but the same caring concern and thoughtfulness that existed then still exists in that area today. Recently, after speaking with my elderly brother’s doctor, it was determined he needed a new prescription. Due to severe storms in Williamsburg and surrounding areas that disrupted electrical and cell phone service, my brother could not be contacted to pick up his prescription. I contacted Jonathan, Pharmacist, at Maiden Drug Company, and told him my brother needed a prescription and couldn’t be contacted to pick up his prescription due to no phone service. Without...

Operation Christmas Child was a success; Corbin donors vital

To the Editor: I am writing to thank Corbin residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Because of the generosity of donors in Corbin and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.9 million shoebox gifts in 2019. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2019, the ministry is now sending 10,569,405 shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through shoeboxes—packed with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items—Corbin volunteers brought joy to children in need around the world. Each gift-filled shoebox is a tangible expression of God’s love, and it is often the first gift...

Letter: KY Court of Appeals candidate thanks Whitley County voters

To the Editor: With thankfulness for the grace of God, and in humble appreciation for all of the voters of Whitley County, I want to express my thanks and gratitude for this opportunity to serve you as Judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals. I will do my very best to always maintain the trust that has been placed in me and to maintain the respect and integrity of this office. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” It is my intent to live up to the honor that...

Letter: ‘Boys from Corbin’ author sad to hear of passing of Bob Terrell

To the Editor: I am very sorry to hear of the passing of my friend Bob Terrell. While writing the book “Boys From Corbin,” Bob was a source of information, not only of Corbin’s history, but insight into his teammates athletic abilities. Maybe I could have written the book without his help, but for sure it was better because of him. As most know, Bob worked away from Corbin for years, and could have probably lived anywhere in America, but chose to return to the town he loved … Corbin. His passion for sports, politics and others never faltered. Bob was the epitome of a Redhound. I’m glad he was my friend. Gary P....

LETTER: Adequate and timely diagnosis of 22Q is critical for treatment

To the Editor: DiGeorge syndrome (DGS). Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS). Shprintzen syndrome. These are outdated names used to describe the same genetic disorder: 22q11.2 Deletion syndrome, or 22q. One in every 2,000 to 4,000 children born and 1 in 68 children born with congenital heart disease has 22q. The number of symptoms (nearly 200) and their level of severity can vary greatly from one child to another and are not always evident at birth. It is the second most common genetic disorder (second only to Down syndrome), yet it is practically unheard of in Kentucky. Why is this important? Playing a medical name game is detrimental to Kentucky families. Because 22q can affect every...

Letter: Old teammate remembers the life of Darrell Storm

To the Editor: Darrell Storm was the son of the late John and Cleo Meadors Storm of Keavy and Corbin. His brother Barry is deceased, and Darrell is survived by his loving wife Carol Powers Storm, son Jeffrey Storm, daughter, Debra Pulventi, and 4 grandchildren. Darrell as a young boy playing YMCA basketball stood out as an all around excellent basketball player. Darrell is one of only 8 Corbin basketball players to play on three 13th Regional basketball Championship teams in 1950, 51, and 52. He was a starting guard with C. D. Vermillion on the 1951-52 teams. Darrell and C.D. went on to be the starting guards at Erskine College four...

Letter to the Editor: Former UC President and wife treated poorly by university

To the Editor: Jim and Dinah Taylor are two of the most special people I have ever had the honor to know. As I was struggling after the loss of my son I came across Dinah’s name while looking for help to survive this unthinkable tragedy in my life. Dinah reached out and encompassed me with the love that she has passed out to hundreds and hundreds of parents who have lost children. She and Jim had lost their only son in a car accident, so they showered their attentions not only on other parents but also on the University of the Cumberlands where Jim was the long time president. They...

Letter to the Editor: Praise for students who wrote letters to Honor Flight veterans

To the Editor: On September 21, Saturday, I had the opportunity and the honor to escort two Vietnam Veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. This was the 9th year of sponsorship from Cumberland Valley Electric and East Kentucky Power. I personally think it is a marvelous thing that Ted Hampton and Tony Campbell, do to help give our Veterans such a wonderful experience. Cumberland Valley Electric helped sponsor Vietnam Veterans, Gary Smith of Barbourville, and Charlie Phillips of Corbin. Our Touchstone Energy Cooperatives helped sponsor Vietnam Veteran, Joel Peyton of Corbin and Korean War Veteran, Robert Mackey of Corbin. These four American heroes were truly an honor to...

Letter: Removal of Taylor family name at UC is outrageous

To the Editor: I wholeheartedly agree with Lois Taylor in her September 4th letter, UofC is denigrating the legacy of former President and his wife. My family has a long history with UC going back to when my father and grandfather attended Cumberland College. Under the 35-year leadership of Dr. Jim Taylor, my husband Luther and I watched UC grow from a small two-year college into a thriving four-year university. We have witnessed the transformation of the campus, the expanding curriculum and the growth of student projects, like Mountain Outreach, that has built 147 houses since 1982. We have seen students from our economically deprived area of eastern KY graduate from UC and...

Letter: ‘Crisis’ situations being used to push bad gun control measures

To the Editor: Saul D. Alinsky (1909-1972) “The Father of modern community organizing” wrote a book called “Rules for Radicals” which outlined procedures to, more or less, stir up trouble for some political aim. Supposedly, the book begins with a dedication to Lucifer. I haven’t read it. Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama are his devoted followers. She wrote her senior thesis on Alinsky’s work and Obama had numerous involvements with his work through the years. One important principle for the effective troublemaker … er radical, is never wasting a good crisis. Some folks would like the 2nd Amendment to go away just as we are having a spike in the number of...
