Selfishness and greed by Corbin’s neighbors hindering progress

To the Editor: An important role of business and government leaders is to remove roadblocks that hinder quality and performance. Leaders are responsible for doing what’s best for the people they lead and serve. We have leaders in Laurel and Knox County including Senator Stivers and Senator Robinson who are more interested in their own self-interest and control than in what’s best for the people. Some businesses in South laurel want to be in Corbin’s city limits but the big bosses must have their way. During the years after World War II Corbin’s leaders put the utility infrastructure in South laurel to enable business and residential growth. The City of Corbin...

Hospice director says volunteers are vital part of organization

Dear Editor: April 10 - 16 is National Volunteer Week and every single volunteer deserves our appreciation and grateful acknowledgement. Across the United States, an army of trained volunteers — more than 430,000 — gave more than 19 million hours of service last year to care for hospice patients. Right here in our community, 32 trained volunteers work with Hospice of the Bluegrass to serve patients and their families in Bell, Clay, Harlan, Knox, Laurel and Whitley counties. Even when time together may be short, there can be a lot of living to do. Hospice volunteers make more special moments possible every day for the patients they serve. Our communities are...

Tri-County Conquer 5k race to be held April 16 to support sex assault victims

To the Editor: What does a victim of sexual assault look like? He is the man with two children who stood behind you for movie tickets. She is the woman you stood behind in the checkout line. He is the older man that held the door open for your family at the restaurant. She is the grandmother standing next to you at a school event. He is that boy you see running through your neighborhood every afternoon. She is the girl that rides her bike through your yard daily. He or she is your friend or your kids’ friend. He or she is your coworker. He or she is your...

School starts too early; keep August a fun summer month

To the Editor: By now maybe some people have educated you about the school start date being changed. Just in case no one pointed it out I just want you to know that the school start was slowly moved into August by many educational administrators in the southern states as an attempt to improve test scores. At the time they felt that if school started sooner the semester could end before the holiday break and therefore students would test better than waiting two weeks into January and forgetting what they learned. Well, as time went by it did not prove to be a good idea for test taking even though...

The 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Vote for Donald Trump

To the Editor: Me and my Emlyn buddy Donnie Witt have some interesting dreams and several of them center around the Ten Commandments. Donnie’s grandpa and my grandpa both told us years ago when we wuz small lads there are some who believe there were actually eleven commandments Moses brought down from the mountain. When Moses went up on the mountain to bring down the stone with the Ten Commandments he fell on the way down and the stone broke and a piece rolled into a huge crevice and Moses couldn’t find it. He struggled and got down the mountain and presented the ten instead of eleven commandments. Donnie and me...

Preserve Kentucky history by donating to special fund

To the Editor: People the world over know of Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln and Jennifer Lawrence’s connection to Kentucky. But what they might not know is that Kentucky also gave us the African American who invented the modern traffic light and one of the Nobel Prize winners who discovered how to split genes. The list of historic accomplishments originating from the commonwealth is lengthy. But many of these stories are no longer being told and, as a consequence, Kentucky is missing important pieces of its identity. That’s a shame, as these lost narratives include many points of pride that could serve to remind us all, young and old, that we come...

Letters to the Editor 1-27-16

Dear Corbin Community, According to the Old Testament, when Israel was saved from Egypt, they were saved for something: the Promised Land. Some 1500 years later, the apostle Paul reminds the Galatians that, like their forefathers, they have not just been saved; they have been saved for something: eternal life. Here, Paul is trying to highlight for the Galatians how Christian salvation, like salvation from Egypt, gives way to a journey. One is saved and called to live into that salvation. Just as entering The Promised Land first required a journey through the desert, so too does experiencing eternal life require the lifelong process of becoming a new creation. Which leads to...
