Whitley Co. student wins 1st at national Educator Rising

For the first time in Whitley County, Whitley County High School student Jada Wilson, a member of Whitley County Educators Rising, achieved first place at a national competition for lesson planning and delivery in the humanities. Wilson was recognized during a special meeting of the Whitley County Board of Education on Thursday, July 24, at the Central Office in Williamsburg. Each year, students participate in state-level and national-level conferences to compete. Wilson first competed at the state level, where she secured second place, allowing her to advance to the national competition. Whitley County student Reese Croley attends Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders

Whitley County’s Reese Croley recently returned home from Kentucky Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders (IFAL). A total of 83 high school students from around the state attended the five-day summer leadership conference. Two identical IFAL conferences were held this summer at Murray State University (MSU) from June 15-19 and at University of Kentucky (UK) from June 22-26, respectively. Forty-one students attended the conference at MSU, while 42 students attended the conference at UK, including Croley. IFAL is designed to expose high school students to college life while helping them explore the different fields of study for careers in agriculture. As part of its duties, the Whitley County Health Department conducts routine public health inspection of various entities, including restaurants, stores, schools, mobile home parks, swimming pools, etc. Some of the most recent inspections include: Food Establishment Inspections • Remos Kitchen, US25W, Williamsburg – 98. May 29 regular inspection. Comments: food storage areas soiled with debris; counters soiled; soiled under storage areas; openings must be filled in where utility was brought into unit. • King Donuts, 1019 Cumberland Falls HWY – no score was documented. This year's Whitley County Ready Fest celebration was held at the Whitley Central Intermediate School July 28. Returning students were given supplies, had the chance to play on inflatables, received free haircuts, and more.

Whitley BOE adds SROs, highlights gifted program

The Whitley County Board of Education (BOE) provided updates on last year’s gifted and talented program, and highlighted the addition of five School Resource Officers (SROs) during a special meeting on Thursday, July 24, at the central office in Williamsburg. Whitley County Superintendent John Siler informed the board and audience that they have been working towards securing up to five SROs over the past few years. He explained, “Our goal is to eventually have one in every building all day, every day. 73rd Annual NIBROC Festival will feature music from Chris Janson, Sammy Kershaw, and more

The full schedule of events for this year’s NIBROC Festival has been released, and as usual, it features a great lineup of live musical acts, as well as athletic competitions, the return of the carnival on Depot Street, and much more. The 2025 NIBROC Festival will take place next Wednesday-through-Saturday, Aug. 6-9, on Depot and Main Streets in downtown Corbin. The festivities will get underway Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. with $20 armband night at the carnival. With an armband, attendees can ride all of the rides they want until the close of the carnival. WCHS students recognized for achievements in health sciences at BOE meeting

A group of outstanding students from the Health Science Pathway at Whitley County High School were recognized at the Whitley County Board of Education meeting July 24  during the White Coat Ceremony. They were recognized for completing their national certification exams through the National Health Career Association in either Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A), or both. In order to be eligible for these certifications, students must first complete four elective courses on or before their senior year: Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology (offered as a dual credit course), Emergency Procedures (offered as a dual credit course), and Body Structures and Functions. Whitley teachers, parents can now communicate via ParentSquare app

Communication between educators and students has changed due to Senate Bill 181, commonly known as SB 181. As a result, educators are no longer allowed to contact their students via social media, text, or phone calls. However, in Whitley County, educators are collaborating to find alternative methods for electronic communication that comply with SB 181. The Whitley County Board of Education (BOE) held a special meeting on Thursday, July 24, at the Central Office in Williamsburg. The meeting focused on updates regarding SB 181.
