Brand new Kentucky film industry is one signature away from becoming reality

Before I begin, let me preface this column by saying that, in order to have everything written and ready for print in our March 19 edition, I am having to look at information that was last updated on Monday of this week. One of the frustrating things about trying to report on happenings in the state legislature is how quickly situations can evolve. Due to that fact, what you read here (and elsewhere in the paper) may or may not reflect the most recent developments. It is my sincere hope that what I have written isn’t already outdated by the time you, the reader, have the newspaper in your...

Spring has sprung, check out what’s happening at the Falls

The overnight and early morning hours are still pretty chilly right now, but the days are getting warmer and the sun is shining until a little later in the evening with each passing day. That means that spring is finally upon us, and what better way to celebrate than to schedule some fun outdoor activities? I have seen several announcements about happenings down at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park recently, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to pass a few of those along to our readers. First, the park is currently hosting a free “12 Months of Trails Trek-a-Thon” program for anyone interested in trying to spend a...

The Pietrowski-Davis coaching rivalry has become legendary

It’s difficult to imagine that there is another high school basketball coaching rivalry in this state that rivals that of Corbin’s Tony Pietrowski versus South Laurel’s Jeff Davis. As I stood and watched the thrilling conclusion of yet another district championship showdown between the Redhounds and the Cardinals last Friday night, I found myself thinking, “How many times have I seen these two guys coach against each other in what ended up being an absolute classic?” With that in mind, I went back in the record books and reviewed all of the encounters between Pietrowski and Davis, and what I found was interesting, to say the least. Let’s have a...

Congrats Alice Fae, Hicks going into KHSAA HOF, date set for 2025 International Dinner

There are a few things that I wanted to use my column space to touch on this week. First, congratulation to Alice Fae Weiland on her well-deserved honor of Volunteer of the Decade. The recognition was bestowed upon her recently by the Whitley County Extension Community Art Center for her many years of contributions as both an artist and a teacher. I had the opportunity to interview Weiland as part of a story that was featured in one of our monthly Senior Living inserts almost two years ago. As a master basket maker, she has dedicated countless hours to perfecting her craft. She has also spent countless hours passing along...

This promises to be the most competitive postseason in years

Some years it is almost a forgone conclusion when it comes to who will be hoisting a regional championship trophy and making the trip to compete in a Sweet 16 state championship tournament. This is definitely not one of those years. In this special section we will primarily be taking a look at upcoming district tournament competition, but with this column I want to zoom out just a little further and consider some of the possibilities for who could find themselves competing for a 13th Region crown at the Corbin Arena early next month. First, let’s take a look at the boys’ side of things... If I had to give my top...

It has been a busy week in Frankfort for our 82nd District representative

In my column last week, I referenced the potential for some proposed legislation that would seek to simplify the transfer process for student-athletes who are trying to move from one school district to another. Well, the bill was officially filed, and was made available to view online just hours after our Feb. 5 edition was sent to the printer. House Bill 292 is being sponsored by none other than Whitley County’s own 82nd District Rep. Nick Wilson. In a press release that was sent out Friday, Wilson said of HB 292, “The measure would establish an interscholastic varsity athletic eligibility rule for transfers between member schools. HB 292 would allow...

Could new legislation help sort out the confusion over high school transfers?

I heard recently that a bill could be filed soon, and may already be filed by the time this newspaper hits shelves, that would seek to simplify the process for high school athletes who are transferring from one school to another. Now, this is a topic that I have hesitated to columnize on in recent years, simply because it is so emotionally charged. Most folks seem to feel that there is generally too much transferring going on in high school these days. That being said, I think that many people will agree with that sentiment right up until they feel that THEIR child should transfer for one reason or another. Then...

A word to our advertisers and prospective advertisers

Myself and other members of the News Journal staff had an enjoyable time at the 2024 Kentucky Press Association Excellence in Newspapers awards banquet last Friday night in Lexington. I got to catch up with some folks I hadn’t seen in a while, the dinner was delicious, and we were lucky enough to come home with another first place award in the General Excellence category. Many thanks to all of those who had a hand in organizing this year’s event. Your efforts are always appreciated. With that being said, this week I would like to take the opportunity to address all of those businesses and organization who are either already...

Unexpected e-mail has me once again asking ‘Who Killed Miss Flora Inman?’

In the summer of 2022, I wrote a couple of columns here in the News Journal exploring the details of a tragic incident from late 1965 where a Corbin woman was brutally murdered in her home just days before Christmas. The initial column was titled “Who Killed Miss Flora Inman,” and little did I know when I wrote it that here I’d be, going on three years later, still obsessing over the answer to that very question. My initial column explained that Inman, a 63-year-old Williamsburg native who had been an educator in the Corbin school system for many years at the time of her death, was the victim of...
