In Tuesday night softball action, the region tournament host Whitley County Lady Colonels played North Laurel very closely, but the Lady Jaguars were able to prevail in the end, winning 2-0. The loss ends Whitley's season with a 17-17 overall record. North will face 49th District rival Clay County for this year's regional championship Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Whitley County High School.

The 2019 13th Region baseball tournament will kickoff Monday, May 27 at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. The Corbin Redhounds will face Bell County in game one at 11:00 am. Knox Central vs. Clay County will come next, followed by Middlesboro vs. Barbourville and North Laurel vs. Whitley County in the night game. Semifinal round games will be at 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, and the championship game will be played Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm.

It was a busy night in our coverage area Tuesday, with a district baseball champion crowned, several regional tennis championships decided and track & field teams hitting the road to compete for a chance to appear at state.
Starting with baseball, this year's 50th District championship game between Corbin and Whitley County was another classic in a series that has become well known for producing plenty of memorable moments. It didn't start out that way, however, as the Redhounds were able to get out to a commanding 9-0 lead after a three-run bottom of the first inning, a five-run bottom of the third and a one-run bottom of the fourth.

The Corbin Redhounds picked up another big win over a regional opponent, shutting out visiting Knox Central 7-0 to improve to 21-8 on the year. Chase Estep, Noah Taylor and Ben Phillips each finished the game with two RBIs apiece, while pitcher Cade Cooney struck out eight Panther batters in a full seven innings of work.
In other baseball action, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets fell to 9-10 on the season after a 17-5 loss at Barbourville, and the Lynn Camp Wildcats fell to 5-18 with an 11-8 loss to Middlesboro.

Williamsburg at Corbin: Corbin wins 12-2. Nate Steely and Evan Poore team up on mound for the Redhounds to strike out seven Yellow Jacket batters. Mason Manning and Casey Kysar had trouble pitching to Corbin, with Noah Taylor going 3-for-4 at the plate and Garner Chandler going 2-for-2. Sydney Bowen was the top Jacket batter, going 2-for-3 on the night.

The Jackets started off this season hot, winning their first five games and becoming back-to-back 13th Region All “A” champs just before Spring Break. Things have been rough since returning from the break, however, with the team going 1-4 including two losses apiece to 50th District rivals Whitley County and South Laurel.

The Corbin Redhounds remain perfect in the 50th District baseball standings, traveling to Whitley County Tuesday evening and picking up a 4-2 victory over the Colonels to improve to 11-6, 4-0. With the loss, Whitley now stands at 12-6, 2-2.
Cole Hicks pitched a complete game for the Hounds against the Colonels, striking out five batters. Chance Dismuke did most of the work on the mound for Whitley, pitching six innings and striking out six. Teammate Jimmy Green pitched one inning and struck out one Corbin batter.

50th District baseball competition got underway Tuesday and Wednesday with Corbin taking on the South Laurel Cardinals while crosstown rivals Whitley County and Williamsburg faced off against each other.
Tuesday – Corbin defeated South Laurel 10-0 at home to improve to 7-4 overall on the season. Cam Allen pitched all six innings for the Redhounds, striking out ten Cardinal batters. Corbin's Austin Reynolds was 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.

It took a few extra innings to get the job done Thursday, but in the end the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were able to defeat the Barbourville Tigers to win their second straight 13th Region All "A" championship title.
Both squads came into this year's regional All "A" final with undefeated records - Williamsburg at 4-0, and Barbourville at 5-0. The Jackets and the Tigers battled each other with all they had, but it was the defending champions who would ultimately prevail, winning 3-1 in 11 innings.
