After 20 years as a stop on the road to Major League Baseball, the Lexington Legends will be playing to win in 2021.
Legends officials announced last Thursday that the organization has joined the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, moving from the South Atlantic League.
As part of the Class A South Atlantic League since 2001, the Legends served as an affiliate of the Houston Astros until 2012. From 2013 until 2020 the team was affiliated with the Kansas City Royals.
“Joining the Atlantic League is the perfect next step for this franchise. We are beyond excited and thankful for the Atlantic League and Major League Baseball for assisting in making this...

Coming off a 25-win season that included a trip to the 13th Region Tournament Whitley County Baseball Coach Jeremy Shope has a lot to look forward to when, and if, the 2020 baseball season begins.
“Everyone involved in our program is excited about this baseball season. We have a really good team returning, a team that has really worked hard this off season. We have a bunch of hungry veterans. That makes for a fun year. Just hope for their sake that this season can be salvaged,” Shope said of his team that includes nine seniors.
Those seniors include Chance Dismuke, who went two-for-two with two RBI’s in the Colonel’s first...
The Williamsburg High School Baseball Team is hoping to repeat as the 13th Region All “A” Tournament champs for a third consecutive year this season.
“I don’t think it has ever been done in history here at the school three times in a row,” noted Head Coach Bryan Hopkins.
Last year’s team had 12 wins and 12 losses, finished the season with a loss in the first round of the 50 District Tournament, and graduated four seniors, Hunter Brown, Cameron Bowen, Clay Kysar and James Reeder.
Hopkins noted that Brown was a key utility player last season, who played first base, third base, pitcher and outfield, and that Bowen batted over .500...

Corbin boys cross country team wins regional and state championships
The top story on our list this year comes from this past fall season when the Corbin High School boys cross country team brought home regional and Class 2A state championship titles. The Redhounds knew they had a very good chance to make it to the top of the region this year, and they knew that they would likely put forth a good showing at the state meet the...

Corbin found themselves trailing 2-0 at the end of two innings Saturday, but a four-run top of the third put them in the driver's seat. North Floyd fought back, adding one run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3, but...
From the Wednesday, July 17 edition...
When our last edition went to print, the Corbin 11-12 year-old Little League All-Stars baseball team was preparing to face the Hazard-Perry All-Stars for this year’s district tournament winner’s bracket championship.
As it turns out, that game took two days to complete, with Corbin establishing a solid lead last Thursday, July 11, before rain forced the remainder of the contest to be postponed until the next day.
When play resumed at Rotary Park on Friday Corbin picked up where they left off, going on to defeat Hazard-Perry and become winner’s bracket champs.
Hazard-Perry fell to North Laurel in the loser’s bracket finals on Saturday, setting up a...

9-10 Corbin Softball
Last Tuesday, June 25, the 9-10 year-old Corbin softball All-Stars were facing elimination when they took the field against Jackson County. A final score was not available by press time, but unfortunately, the Corbin girls were sent home after a 19-4 loss.
The 9-10 softball All-Stars fell into the loser’s bracket of their tournament, held in Williamsburg, after being shutout by the Tri-City All-Stars in round one. Even though game two also didn’t go their way, they showed definite signs of improvement, plating four runs to avoid back-to-back shutouts.
Once again, this year’s Corbin 9-10 year-old Little League softball All-Stars...
In recent years we have recognized the best high school baseball and softball players in the county in a variety of different ways. We’ve had All-County Most Valuable Players and MVP runners-up. We’ve had individual team MVPs and Honorable Mentions. We’ve even had some winners in special superlative categories, but this year we’re changing it up again with a pair of top ten lists.
With so many talented players in the county this year, however, it was incredibly difficult to whittle the list down to just ten in both sports. For this reason we are also including five honorable mentions at the end of both lists, but even with those...
