Whitley Co. Baseball advances to 50th District Championship

Whitley County's Bryce Anderson held the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets hitless over three innings as the Colonels won the opening game of the 50th District Baseball Tournament, 15-0. Anderson struck out eight, throwing 45 pitches in the game. The Colonels put up nine runs in their half of the first inning en route to the win. “It’s go time!” That is how Corbin High School Softball Coach Crystal Stidham described the first round of the 50th District Softball Tournament, which begins at noon today at South Laurel High School alongside the 50th District Baseball Tournament. On the softball diamond, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets will be looking to pull the huge upset of top seed South Laurel. While Whitley County Baseball will go into next week’s 50th District Tournament as the top seed, the Colonels and rival Corbin Redhounds have each strung together long winning streaks as the season nears its end. Whitley County improved to 25-8 on the season after running its current winning streak to seven Monday night with a 10-0 shutout of visiting Harlan County. The Corbin Redhounds bounced way back from Saturday’s 11-0 loss to Somerset, riding Evan Poore’s no-hitter to an 11-0 victory over Harlan County Monday night. Poore threw 56 pitches, 40 for strikes in the effort. The only baserunner came in the top of the second when the leadoff batter reached first on an error. After getting the first out on a fielder’s choice, Poore cleared the bases by picking off the runner on first and then recorded one of his eight strikeouts on the night for the third out. Corbin’s four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt with a 10-0 loss at Clay County Monday night, but the Redhounds have won eight of the last ten.
