Hopkins thinks baseball Jackets have great potential in 2017, excited for new season The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets did not secure a district win during their 2016 campaign, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t highlights. The team got to travel to Florida at the beginning of the season, where they showed Head Coach Bryan Hopkins just how competitive they could be. Once they returned home they went 4-2 with victories over 13th Region opponents Bell County, Barbourville, Lynn Camp and OBI, but that was followed by a 2-11 record between March 22 and April 26. High school baseball and softball teams all over Kentucky are officially starting team activities this week. With that in mind, we begin a series of previews taking a look at our local programs, starting now with the Lynn Camp Wildcats and Lady Cats. The Wildcats baseball team was able to put double digits in the win column last season, recording 11 victories, including an 8-4 win over 51st District rivals Pineville. They were unable to make the 13th Region tournament, however, falling to Barbourville 6-4 in the first round of their district tourney. After Tuesday night, the summer 2016 All-Stars baseball season has officially come to an end in Corbin. 9-10 All-Stars: The Corbin Red 9-10 year-old All-Stars entered into this year’s District 4 tournament as one of the favorites to win it all. Knox County handed them their first loss of the summer last Tuesday, July 12, dropping them into the loser’s bracket, but from there Corbin was able to rebound and pick up a very convincing 14-0 win over Hazard-Perry. The following is an update on the story appearing in the July 13 print edition about Corbin All-Star baseball teams competing in district tournaments… Thursday night update: The Corbin Red 9-10 year-old All-Star team defeated Knox County 5-1 Thursday at Rotary Park, forcing a decisive game two Friday at 7:00 pm for all the marbles. These two teams will meet one last time to determine an undisputed District 4 champion, and also determine who will be going on to this year's state tournament. 9-10 year-olds keep rolling into district tourney: After winning an Area 2 championship last week, the Corbin Red 9-10 year-old All-Stars team began play in the District 4 tournament Saturday against Hazard-Perry. Still at Rotary Park, the Corbin All-Stars had a large crowd of supporters on hand to watch them advance with a 10-0 victory, keeping them undefeated this summer. Justin Troutman had a very productive outing against Hazard-Perry, reaching base three times, scoring one run and knocking in two RBIs. Pitchers Bradric Helton and Jeremiah Gilbert combined for nine strikeouts, giving up only three hits between them in the shutout win. Next up for Corbin Red was a game against Knox...

To update the previous report on Area Little League All-Stars tournaments, the Corbin Red 9-10 year-old team was able to defeat North Laurel 1 Tuesday evening by the final score of 2-1, making them champions of Area 2 in 2016 and advancing them to this year's District 4 tournament, which will get underway this weekend at Rotary Park. Another spring sports season is in the books, and several baseball and softball players in Whitley County have given praise-worthy performances over the course of the last few months. As of Tuesday night, there are no more coverage area baseball or softball teams left standing in 2016 as both the Corbin Redhounds and the Williamsburg Lady Jackets fell to North Laurel in the semifinal round of this year's 13th Region baseball and softball tournaments. Corbin got into a hole early against the Jaguars, and by the fourth inning North had built up a commanding 10-0 lead. Both the softball and baseball 50th District championship games were contested Tuesday evening at South Laurel High School in London. In softball action, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets met up with the host Lady Cardinals. The Jackets were coming off of a thrilling 7-0 victory over Corbin on Monday, but things did not go their way in the district title game. The Lady Cards were dominant, winning 10-0 in five innings. Both teams will now move on to this year’s 13th Region tournament, being held next week at Knox Central High School.
