As of Tuesday night, there are no more coverage area baseball or softball teams left standing in 2016 as both the Corbin Redhounds and the Williamsburg Lady Jackets fell to North Laurel in the semifinal round of this year's 13th Region baseball and softball tournaments. Corbin got into a hole early against the Jaguars, and by the fourth inning North had built up a commanding 10-0 lead. Things were looking bleak for the Hounds at this point, but they continued to fight, putting a couple of runs up on the board to prevent the shutout loss. Both the softball and baseball 50th District championship games were contested Tuesday evening at South Laurel High School in London. In softball action, the Williamsburg Lady Jackets met up with the host Lady Cardinals. The Jackets were coming off of a thrilling 7-0 victory over Corbin on Monday, but things did not go their way in the district title game. The Lady Cards were dominant, winning 10-0 in five innings. Both teams will now move on to this year’s 13th Region tournament, being held next week at Knox Central High School. With only days remaining before postseason play begins, area baseball teams are busy making final preparations on the field. Assuming weather does not force cancellations for the remainder of the week, all coaching staffs will have at least one more opportunity to see their teams in action before tournament play begins. In this week’s Senior Spotlight we meet the senior leaders on the Lynn Camp High School baseball and softball teams. The baseball Wildcats are being led in 2016 by three seniors – Tyler Emery, Justin Taylor and Austyn Weddle. The Bat Cats have taken a big step up from last year, already having nine wins on their record, as opposed to 2015’s three-win season. The Corbin Redhounds baseball team is on a mission this spring. They want to win district and region titles, and with the leadership of four talented seniors, they may do just that. Michael May, 18, said, “As a senior, I have to be a good leader and set a good example. Coverage area baseball teams returned from Spring Break beach trips this week to open up play in their respective districts. In the 50th District, the Whitley County Colonels started things off Monday by hosting their rivals from across town – the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets. Both teams were coming off of productive Spring Break trips, with the Colonels traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC and the Jackets traveling to Cocoa Beach, FL. The early stages of Monday’s contest favored the visitors, as Williamsburg would take a 4-1 lead after one inning. This week we meet five senior athletes from Whitley County High School – three from the Colonel baseball team, and two from the Lady Colonels softball team. The baseball Colonels kicked off district play this week with a big 15-5 victory over crosstown rivals Williamsburg. It was the first step in what Whitley hopes will be a championship season in 2016. The date of April 6th, 2016 will now be etched into the mind of University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball Head Coach Brad Shelton along with many members of the Patriots baseball program for a lifetime. Just over a week after earning his 500th career win at UC, Shelton’s team would come home to sweep the Cavaliers of Montreat College in a mid-week doubleheader. There were heightened emotions on each end of the spectrum last Friday night at Williamsburg’s Briar Creek Park. On the baseball side, it was the elation of a thrilling comeback win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Over at the softball field, it was the despair of losing a heart breaker in extra innings. On March 29th, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Baseball team defeated the Berea College Mountaineers in a single game matchup by a score of 7-5. With the win, Head Coach Brad Shelton earned his 500th win during his illustrious coaching career at University of the Cumberlands. Hitting the 500 win mark will rank him second in wins in Cumberland Baseball history, and only puts him two wins behind all-time wins leader Coach Terry Stigall. Shelton has an overall coaching record of 689 wins and 371 losses with a win percentage of .650.
