With a 16-2 win at home against the visiting Williamsburg Yellow Jackets, the Whitley County Colonels got their revenge for a heartbreaking loss at Briar Creek Park Monday. Whitley (7-10, 1-3) will look to keep things rolling later this week when they welcome Harlan Independent to WCHS. Williamsburg (7-7, 1-3) will hope to bounce back Thursday when they go on the road to face Berea.
The Corbin Redhounds are still undefeated in 50th District play, improving to 12-3, 3-0 with an impressive 9-0 victory at South Laurel Tuesday. The Cardinals will travel to Corbin on Wednesday...

The game between the Corbin Redhounds (9-3) and the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (4-5) was postponed after five innings due to weather. The Hounds were up 6-0 when play was suspended, and the game is scheduled to resume Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Corbin High School.
Meanwhile, the Whitley County Colonels (5-8) were able to complete their game against South Laurel (6-5) in London, falling by the final score of 5-4. The Colonels have now lost their last four games, and will try to get back on track this Friday evening at Harlan.

This week didn’t start out the way the Whitley County Colonels hoped it would. They opened up district play at home Monday, falling to the South Laurel Cardinals 6-2. However, despite that setback the team is remaining optimistic about what they could accomplish together in 2017.
The pieces are in place this spring for the Colonels to contend for a district title and reach the 13th Region tournament, including one of the most important components for any program – veteran leadership. This year the Whitley baseball team is being led by five talented and dedicated seniors – Jesse Bryant, Austin Caldwell, Tyler Downs, Brandon Harlan and Tanner Prewitt.

This time last year Peyton Buford was on his way to becoming 2016 News Journal All-County Player of the Year by helping the Corbin Redhounds to a 22-15 season, including a 50th District championship and an appearance in the semifinals of the 13th Region tournament.
Now a freshman at Alice Lloyd College, Buford is finding a way to contribute to the Eagles baseball program. He recently spoke about his experiences for this special feature story.

“Things are going good. It’s different than being in Corbin, and I admit that was a little nervous coming in, but I decided that I was going to do whatever it...
UPDATE: The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (4-4) fell to visiting Middlesboro 15-3 Thursday evening in the championship game of this year's 13th Region All "A" tournament.
Middlesboro took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Williamsburg was able to tie the game up at 3-3 after two runs were walked in and sophomore Hunter Brown knocked in another in the bottom of the inning.
Middlesboro loaded the bases in the top of the third, and would add eight more runs to the board to retake the lead, 11-3. They would extend their lead further in the fourth inning with four more runs, going on to win 15-3 in five...
Redhounds ready to take the field as defending 50th District champs
After a 22-win season and a 50th District championship in 2016, expectations are high for the Corbin Redhounds baseball team this spring. The Hounds graduated a few key players from that district championship squad, but Head Coach Cody Philpot is confident in the overall ability of his returning players.
“We lost a really good senior class,” Philpot said. “Getting that district championship was big for those guys, but I actually think the ceiling could be higher for us this year. We are a little bit more athletic throughout the lineup, but at the same time, a lot of those guys...
Only the 13th Region champion North Laurel Jaguars finished the season with more wins than the Whitley County Colonels in 2016. The Jags recorded a total of 29 victories, while the Colonels recorded 22. 50th District rivals Corbin also had 22 wins on the year, splitting with Whitley, 1-1.
When you consider their record, it’s obvious that the Colonels enjoyed a lot of success on the baseball diamond last spring. However, they were still unable to reach their ultimate goal of competing for a 13th Region crown after they suffered a heart breaking loss to South Laurel in the first round of the district tournament.
This season, Head Coach Kyle Adams...
Hopkins thinks baseball Jackets have great potential in 2017, excited for new season
The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets did not secure a district win during their 2016 campaign, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t highlights. The team got to travel to Florida at the beginning of the season, where they showed Head Coach Bryan Hopkins just how competitive they could be.
Once they returned home they went 4-2 with victories over 13th Region opponents Bell County, Barbourville, Lynn Camp and OBI, but that was followed by a 2-11 record between March 22 and April 26. It was a rough stretch, for sure, but the Jackets showed that they had a lot of...
High school baseball and softball teams all over Kentucky are officially starting team activities this week. With that in mind, we begin a series of previews taking a look at our local programs, starting now with the Lynn Camp Wildcats and Lady Cats.
The Wildcats baseball team was able to put double digits in the win column last season, recording 11 victories, including an 8-4 win over 51st District rivals Pineville. They were unable to make the 13th Region tournament, however, falling to Barbourville 6-4 in the first round of their district tourney.
Now, Head Coach Marc Estep is hoping that his team can continue to improve, winning even more games...
After Tuesday night, the summer 2016 All-Stars baseball season has officially come to an end in Corbin.
9-10 All-Stars: The Corbin Red 9-10 year-old All-Stars entered into this year’s District 4 tournament as one of the favorites to win it all. Knox County handed them their first loss of the summer last Tuesday, July 12, dropping them into the loser’s bracket, but from there Corbin was able to rebound and pick up a very convincing 14-0 win over Hazard-Perry.
The win over Hazard advanced the red team to the district finals, where they would once again be meeting up with Knox County. Corbin would have to beat Knox twice in order...
