The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will be looking to end a two-game losing streak that includes a 73-64 loss to Jackson County in the 13th Region All “A” Classic. The Jackets will be hosting Lynn Camp on Thursday and Pineville on Saturday, before traveling to Whitley County on Tuesday night. After having their first three games postponed because of COVID–19, the Corbin Redhounds will open their season Thursday night at Bell County. The Redhounds will have tough road tests as they travel to Clay County Friday night and then to Knox Central on Saturday afternoon. The Whitley County Colonels opened the season with three consecutive wins. Following Tuesday night’s game at Pineville, (the results of which were not available as of press time,) the Colonels are scheduled to host 50th District opponents South Laurel on Friday and Williamsburg on Tuesday. “I have seen a group of kids totally committed to giving their heart and soul to winning,” Coach Mark White said. “We have such amazing kids here at Whitley County! The Corbin Redhounds were scheduled to open the season Tuesday night against Harlan County. However, that game was cancelled. Corbin Athletic Director Steve Jewell said Coach Tony Pietrowski is in the process of attempting to reschedule the game. While Friday night’s game at Bell County is still scheduled to be played, Jewell said Pietrowski is currently looking for a new opponent for the Saturday afternoon game. High school basketball fans across the commonwealth will have two more weeks of game action this season. KHSAA officials announced Thursday that two weeks will be added to the end of the season that is scheduled to begin Jan. 4. Teams may begin practice again on Monday. District tournaments will now be held the week of March 15, with region tournaments scheduled to begin on March 22. The Sweet 16 tournaments will be held between April 24 and May 9.

With Rodney Clarke now manning the helm for the boys basketball team, Darrell Hendrix has assumed the reins for the Lynn Camp Lady Cats. Hendrix is no stranger around the Lynn Camp campus. With wife Nikki Hendrix serving as the head coach of the softball team, he is an assistant coach for them as well. He also spent four years as the defensive coordinator for the football team. Williamsburg City School welcomes home Eric Swords to become the new Boys’ Basketball Coach at Williamsburg City School. Eric is a 2004 graduate of Williamsburg City School and was a 4-year letterman in Basketball for the Yellow Jackets. Coach Swords comes to Williamsburg from Berea Community Schools, where he served as the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach since 2016. This past season, his Pirates’ set a school record for the most wins in a single season with 22 and led his team to their first 11th Region Basketball Tournament appearance since 2006.
