Katy Powers, senior, was crowned the 2021 Basketball Homecoming Queen at the Whitley County Colonels vs. Williamsburg basketball game last Saturday. Powers is the daughter of Tracy and Travis Powers. She was escorted by her brother, Kaden Powers. Whitley County won the game 78-76.  

The Corbin Redhounds appear to have found their groove, running off their sixth straight win with a 73-63 victory over Madison South last Thursday. The Corbin Lady Redhounds got back got back on the winning track in impressive style Friday night with a 73-64 victory at Whitley County. “I just feel we came out and competed for four quarters,” said Coach Isaac Wilson. “Raegan (Walker) stepped in and played more minutes. All-in-all just a team effort.” Walker led the way with 22 points, shooting 73 percent from the field. Kallie Housley added 18 and Shelby Stewart knocked down 14. The Corbin Redhounds rebounded from their three-game losing streak by running off three straight wins over Knox Central, Whitley County and Pineville. On Wednesday, Corbin defeated Knox Central, 77-72. Hayden Llewellyn led the Redhounds with 21 points. Stewart Carter added 18 and Brody Wells poured in 15. The Corbin Redhounds are looking to get back on track following their third consecutive loss. The Redhounds fell at home Monday night to South Laurel, 66-57. Following the cancellation of the Jan. 29 games versus Whitley County because of COVID–19, Corbin got back on the court last Tuesday, losing at Madison Central, 96-60. Corbin and Whitley County’s girls continue their battle in the 50th district. Whitley County defeated Corbin last Thursday 92-89 in double overtime. Darcie Anderson led all scorers with 38 points for the Lady Colonels. Mikayla Wilder added 20 and 13 rebounds and Reis Anderson had 15 points. Winning streaks have to come to an end at some point, and that point for the Whitley County Lady Colonels was Monday night at North Laurel. The Lady Colonels had extended their season opening winning streak to seven before losing, 78-52 at North Laurel. The Whitley County boys basketball game against Knox Central has been cancelled. The game had been scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Whitley County High School. Superintendent John Siler said the game has been cancelled because of COVID–19, which has forced the team and coaching staff to quarantine. The quarantine could last up to 14 days, depending on a number of factors.

The beat went on for the Whitley County Lady Colonels Basketball Team who improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season with recent wins over Madison Central, Middlesboro and Williamsburg. “There is a lot of buy-in,” said coach Sean Pigman when asked the key to the hot start for his team, noting whether it is in the weight room, during shooting drills, ball handling drills, or  come game time, he is seeing a complete effort.
